The US government actually performed a raid on an IS compound in an attempt to free the prisoners, including those already killed by IS. Obviously the raid was unsuccessful, but it shows that the US government actually tried to do something.

Yea, I realize that. But I am also of the mindset of, if at first you don't succeed, try, try, again. They didn't and actively hindered the family from trying to pay off the ransom. It was the family and those who donated...not the Gov't. If it cost the taxpayers nothing, and got the family their son back...why would the Gov't put a stop to it?

Maybe the guy as some mental health problems, if even some of what is coming out of the DPRK is true it doesn't sound like anything a rational person would .
It's one of the things I truly like about America is that it will go all out to rescue one of its citizens trapped abroad, still shows that glimmer of what America once was.

I'm thinking he is a double agent and got popped. Think about it, Dennis Rodman went over there, got drunk at a skunk, and NOTHING happened to him inspite of his poor behavior. This kid goes "allegedly trying to prove human rights violations" and gets popped? Not buying it. A kid with no job? A kid that can AFFORD to FLY close enough, and pay whomever to sneak in? NOT FRIGGIN BUYING THIS MILK.

Of all the countries to explore, this nut picked NK? It would have been easier to pose as a Lord of War and find Boko Haram in Nigeria.

Hard Labour
Torture
Beatings
Starvation
Sexual abuse
Medical Experiments
Mock Executions.
Typhus fever

If he was thinking about getting his 15 minutes of fame, you know he failed math in school. 15 minutes is a very small fraction of six years. Chances are, IF he survives it, we will have forgotten about him by then. And even upon release will be nothing but a small blip on the MSM radar.

I find that this is sad as all get out. And should raise some questions, the first being how did he get a visa to visit North Korea? Did he not think or understand that it is not like most Asian countries and that ultimately they play by their own rules and laws?

Personally if he did this, then perhaps leaving him there may be a message to all who would seek to go to that country and let him sit for 6 years and then when he is released, escort him back home. Course he may not have a home to go to, after all 6 years of back due rent.

I think the craziest part is that people are actually believing anything North Korea says. They haven't even said what he was charged with, or presented any evidence whatsoever of any wrongdoing. KCNA is North Korea's state run media apparatus. This is the same country who makes outlandish claims about unicorns; the same country who showed a picture of a tree in the US with no birds in it, and claimed it was because our citizens are starving and have eaten them all. One could write a book about the crazy things that have been said by North Korea, thus don't believe anything they say. ESPECIALLY when it comes to politics.

They are the same country who recently stated that they have freedom of religion, while then proceeding to arrest another US citizen as he was leaving the country for allegedly leaving a bible behind in a room somewhere. You get my point I'm sure. NK is by far the worst country in the world for propaganda, so to think they would tell the truth, instead of trying to make themselves look good and the US citizen look bad, especially when it comes to their image, is just craziness. This holds true for the handful of other US prisoners they have at the moment. There is absolutely no way this guy defected to North Korea. It appears he was living in South Korea and entered the North as a tourist. His involvement with Wikileaks is just a North Korean attempt to make the guy appear important to a certain extent, thus serving the North Korean aims of getting a high-profile politician to enter their country to attempt to secure the release of this prisoner. Much like what happened with Bill Clinton and the two women who were dragged from China into North Korea by North Korean soldiers.

I am quite certain that North Korea will release him, as well as the other US prisoners they currently have, but the question is what will it take, and how long will it take? I suspect he will be released within a year, which is just a guess based on what has happened in NK in the past. Depending on how the US responds, it could be much earlier. North Korea likely wants to get some concessions out of the United States, which is unlikely to happen. They would probably like the US to start sending humanitarian aid once again, but the majority of it probably doesn't reach the civilian population anyway, but rather goes towards those living in Pyongyang, the majority of whose citizens are affiliated with the state in some manner. They're either working for the government or the military in some capacity, or are family members of such individuals. That is how it used to be, and I'm sure that is still how it is. Ordinary people don't get to live in the capital, which is the only city that could even remotely be termed "modern." Probably still the only city with electricity. Wouldn't surprise me.
