In a rare admittance of the use of the so-called 'Hannibal Directive', in which Israeli soldiers kill their fellow soldiers to avoid their capture, an Israeli military officer admitted in an interview with the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahranoth that he ordered a mass bombardment of parts of Rafah during the Israeli invasion, last month, in order to ensure the death of an Israeli soldier who he believed had been captured.

For anyone not familiar with the term Hannibal Directive, it basically means:

The order, drawn up in 1986 by a group of top Israeli officers, states that at the time of a capture the main mission becomes forcing the release of the captured soldiers from their captors, even if that means injury to Israeli soldiers.[3] It allows commanders to take whatever action is necessary, including endangering the life of an captured soldier, to foil the capture. However it does not allow for a soldier to be killed in order to prevent his capture, according to the IDF chief of staff

Now I was watching Gaza live throughout this time and it's something I'll never forget, the sound of mortars, explosions, helicopters, drones & machine gun fire was incredibly vicious. Not surprising to learn that 112 Palestinians were killed in the massacre, including:

... a number of families who were crushed to death when their homes were hit by airstrikes – like the Zo'rob family, who lost five children, including 7-year-old twins Amir and Odai, their 8-year-old brother Khaled, 10-year-old Shahd and 12-year-old Rawan.

This was all for one soldier, which may be a sign of what the lifes of Palestinians seem to be worth when compared. I find this statement particularly insulting considering Israel doesn't even let the people of Gaza leave to cross borders:

In his interview with Yedioth Ahranoth, Colonel Ofer Winter called the civilian population in Gaza “a partner of terror” that “gets what they choose”.

So in actual fact, the people of Gaza choose to live in their homes, even while they get war crimes, massacres and war thrown at them every few years.

Damn, so to save the Israeli soldier from being captured they just kill him?

You know, they invaded Gaza, a small territory that they can easily search for any and all captured soldiers, especially with all their tech and spying they should know exactly where to look. But instead, they kill him and then let their propaganda machine take over..

This Israeli gov't....

I remember when it happened, the media outlets were really harping on about the capture of this one particular solder, and i thought it odd that they were decimating his last known coordinates with airstrikes. brutal policy for sure. This really highlights how this capture was just an excuse to bring out the big guns.

The air-war in Gaza was about more than kidnappings or breaking Hamas- it was also about free (not to mention permit-less) 'rezoning,' destroying old neighborhoods in anticipation of future settlement/ reconstruction. There is a lot of money in construction/demolition, and we already know Israel's track record with ruthless settlement policies.

As far as that bit about all Palestinian civilians being terrorists, it goes to show warlike people are motivated by emotion rather than being able to rationally make decisions that will benefit both sides.

Sadly, Palestinian blood is as worthless as a can of coke. The world watches by the illegally occupation of land, bombing of an open air prison and continuous expansion of settler villages.

By that logic, every Israeli soldier should be implanted with some remote-controlled detonated micro-grenades around the heart for such situations.

Give it time. The Israeli gov't will turn their soldiers into suicide bombers.

depends, what if they had tangible evidence he was going to be seriously tortured then executed and forced to give away positions or plans of troop movements?

if i was captured by arab militants at a time when my government was bombing and butchering them, id want a quick death!

This is what happens when you will only trade a soldier for a thousand of your people. It was the Palestinians that created this equation. And Agit8edchop also gives good tactical military reasons to take out the soldier. But of course this is just another example of the inhumanity of the Israelis for this crowd...

And people were expecting something good from the Israeli terrorist regime? They kill. It's what they do. They even kill their own. They have no value for life. They do not want peace. War crimes and prison is what the Israeli government should be dealing with now after what they just done to the Palestinians. Funny how there isn't any focus on that but all these little propaganda acts keep coming out. Just like the Israeli soldiers who refuse to spy on the Palestinians....who they think they're kiddin'?
