Build an air force.

The situation:

You are the defence minister of a well-to-do middle-rate country that has just struck oil. As you have a decent human rights record and are fairly pro-democracy, everyone and anyone wants to sell you weapons. You have a Big budget but moderate infrastructure that cannot be expanded.

Your brief: Buy aircraft for an air force to number no more than 1,000 airframes. All aircraft types must have an in-service date of 2009.

I would set up a training arrangement with the RAF, they do this sort of thing, so no money wasted on trainers

I would acquire 60 Typhoons that the RAF is willing to defer that would give me a world class air defence fighter quickly and equipped to a high standard.

Excellent, this is just like playing Superpower 2 only i generally design my own aircraft in that The other countries generally don't like my expansionistic ways and they don't sell their shiny aircraft to me

25 F23's (I would fund research into ok!)
ground attack: 45 JSF's ( 15 of each class)
15 tornado's

Multi role: 50 typhoons

If it wasnt for 2009 i�d buy solely russian equipment. Cheap and sufficient for defense. Which nation would my little country want to invade ?
For the spare money I would make sure that next time I need fighters, i can build them myself.

I would back my 60 Typhoons up with 140 Gripen in swing role mode. I would also buy 60 Tornado GR4 for strike and 100 Yak 130D for the light tactical role, I would then fund BAe and Northrop to develop the FOAS YF-23 to replace my Tornadoes and eventually a Typhoon re[placement version as well.

I would buy 24 Nimrod MRA.4 for Maritime patrol/ASW and some USN surplus S-3 Vikings for the same role on my carriers, they would be equipped with Naval Rafales in the absence of a naval Typhoon as its the next best thing, in a dual role capability.

For strategic transport I would get Antonov to build me 20 An-225's with RR Trent power, 4 of these would replace the six engines of the original while for smaller tactical transports it would have to be the C-130J in the absence of the A-400 in time.

My main helicopter would the the Merlin HAS.1, HC.2, and HAR.3 with my combat helo being the Kamov Hokum.

My AEW type would be a straight fitment of the e-767 systems into the A-340 airframe, I would have 20 of these 'E-340' aircraft.

I was thinking about that one but kinda dismissed it, but how cool would that be if it could be done. Endurance by the bucketload, you could have standard A340 aircraft for passenger transport, and the tanker aircraft (A330-200) uses the same wing!

Edit: A340 AEW with SAMPSON radar? lol....

Awesome idea. All the AWACS aircraft would have a brain haemorrage, and all the fighters would run out of missiles. You could do a Mathias Rust en masse..

Actually, the planes would be safe from heat seaking missiles, as far as I know. The exhaust temperature is pretty low compared to most other planes.

EDIT: Plus its VERY slow speed and small size may make it hard to get in a strafing run with cannons. I REALLY don't know about that though... it would probably be the opposite, in fact.
