BLS: Unemployed More Likely to Go Shopping on Average Day Than Look for Job

Did everyone miss the part where it says "shopping - for things other than groceries or gas?"

So, they aren't shopping for fuel or food. They're shopping for other things.

Found this on their website:

Unpublished tables of time-use estimates by age, ethnicity, employment status, educational attainment, marital status, presence and age of household children, and other categories are available upon request by e-mailing the ATUS staff.

So it appears you have to email them to get the info. I'll send an email and see what they send me.

How about shopping for toilet paper/cleaning supplies or any number of other essential items not covered under food/gas? Is that allowed or are unemployed people forbidden from that as well?

Thanks Sheep...I will dig it up, but the definition of "not employed" for ATUS data is different then "Unemployed" according to what I read yesterday.

"unemployed" is people that are eligible/able, members of the potential work-force and looking for work..

"not employed" includes the retired, elderly, stay-at-home parents and people otherwise not actively members of the work force or looking for work.

Perhaps CNS news did not read definitions...let me hunt it down.

Not employed.

Persons are not employed if they do
not meet the conditions for employment. The not
employed include those classified as unemployed as
well as those classified as not in the labor force
(using CPS definitions).

The OP and CNS News is conflating "unemployed" with "not employed"

All this judgment on what unemployed people do. Unemployed... that's a broad stroke. Sometimes when I'm unemployed I go to the movies all day. I plan lunch dates. I buy things for fun even. The horror.

You don't have to suffer and spend every waking moment searching for a job.
