Dr. Julie Gerberding, chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has indicated that additional flu vaccine has been inspected by the Food and Drug Administration, and will be purchased and distributed in the U.S.

"We are in the process this week of developing purchase plans for additional doses," Gerberding said. "We do have optimism additional doses can be purchased. We hope for an announcement later in the week from [Health and Human Services] Secretary [Tommy] Thompson."

Thompson said last month that the Food and Drug Administration has completed its inspection of the vaccine from foreign manufacturers that would be available on an investigational basis. The vaccine is considered an investigational new drug because it wasn't developed under the supervision of the FDA.

About 61 million doses have been available this season, including a nasal vaccine only for healthy people. The CDC has said 98 million people, including 9 million children, need the vaccine.

"The shortage of flu vaccine makes our public health officials very, very nervous, not to mention our patients," Dr. John Nelson, president of the AMA, said Monday.

Each year, the flu hospitalizes about 200,000 people and kills about 36,000 people in the United States. However, is our best approach at combating this virus an "investigational," unproven drug that has not been tested by the FDA? My fear is that this could prove to be a case of the cure being worse than the disease.
