I feel we are derailing this thread into another huge topic, let me just repeat what I initially said.
Demolishing of Berlin Wall was not a surrender, but merely a gesture of GOOD WILL.
West German Stazi (analogous to KGB) was functioning as KGB, enhanced with German usual perfection.
E. Honnekcer didn't betrayed USSR, it was Gorbie that betrayed him. If you would ask Berliners just month prior to destruction of Wall if they think
it is possible in near future, I suggest those Germans to answer here if they reading this post. But my personal feelings are that the number
believing in near collapse would be in low decile %.
I spoke with some West Berliners not many years after 1988 and all those who I speak said, it was a pleasant surprise.
Pleasant - yes, but surprise.
When the Wall collapsed, Soviet authorities embraced this. Such as ,I even remember that part of the Wall was displayed in the central place of Riga
(capital of Latvia), mind you Latvia was still part of USSR.
