A severe lack of protective gear for health workers, who are at high risk of infection because of their close contact with the sick, is a major obstacle to stopping the outbreak.

Health workers account for about 10% of the deaths so far. Much of the gear must be destroyed after use, so wards need a constant flow of equipment.

One nurse at a hospital in Monrovia, Liberia's capital, said she and her colleagues have resorted to cutting up their old uniforms and tying them on their heads. They cut holes in the fabric, so they can see, said the nurse, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorised to talk to the media.

"It is really pathetic," she said. "We are not equipped to face the situation."

Ebola nurses improvise gear

What more needs to be said?

No equipment equals no safe environment for those fighting on the front line.

It's spreading too fast for them to stay ahead of.

This also demonstrates that we will only be told what they're willing to tell us...

Sorry but IF some outbreak happened in the USA then Martial law and quarantine is one of the best way to halt its spread.

Running around all MERIKA! Rioting , looting, protesting and waving your gunz about ect will just make any pathogen spread quicker.

Your rants about America are getting pathetic. It is so sad to see people who think liberty and freedom are external things that can be hand out or collected when the need arises. Thankfully for the US the people who founded this country understood people like you all to well.

Also what does this topic have to do with gun rights? Progressives are always looking to spin the truth to fit. Thankfully many people see threw this childish banter.

Take your pick from Any of these......

www.bbc.com...

"Crazeyewok' - Ebola isn't a problem in the USA unless the masses order it as a side order with one of there six or seven takeaways per day OR there's an outbreak in a Botox or plastic surgery clinic or even worse, in a gun store..........

I guess your reading comprehension is as crap as my spellin.

I have no issue wit guns in general

My point was if there was ever a outbreak in the USA of anything then its not goingnto be buisness as useal.

Its not a right/left thing its reality.

Quarentine and curfews need to be temporarly enacted.

What do you suggest instead? Allow large crowds to conregate? Attack any goverment workers? Alloe looting?

Im talking a national emegancy here, and those founders did allow certain measures to be enacted dureingntimes of war ect.

This is not progresive talk or anti gun talk. This is reality.

In a outbreak you cant have morons running round like headless chickens like in new orleans or st louis otherwise bye bye bye USA. And guess what? I dont want to see my brothers over the pound harmed.

Again

Im not talking about permament martial law or mass gun confications. Just a temporarly state of emergancy were the national guards employef, large crowds are banned, non estential work cancelled and curfew enacted with travel resticted to any hot zones. Common sense measures.

Chances are Ebola wil never require that in the USA but there are other pathogens out there that might.

UPDATE PICKINS

The Ebola crisis demands that America act

We are about to witness a human catastrophe that could destroy large portions of a continent and pose a global threat. And the response of the world, including the United States, is feeble, irresponsible and disrespectful of nature’s lethal perils.

What Will It Take to Stop Ebola? We Can't Lose Even a Day, UN Says

…The latest count: 3,685 people sick, and 1,841 of them have died.

We cannot afford to lose even a day,” Dr. David Nabarro, global Ebola coordinator for the United Nations, told reporters. ….

…..“It has become a global threat and we require urgent action,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan.

There are pressing needs for supplies such as protective equipment and medicines, hospital beds and most of all, people.

….WHO’s Dr. Keiji Fukuda said experts estimate it can take as many as 200 to 250 people to take care of 80 Ebola patients. Doctors, nurses and anyone tending to the personal needs of a sick Ebola patient must wear full protective gear. It’s hot and uncomfortable, and groups such as Medecins Sans Frontieres restrict their staffers to 40-minute shifts.

“We anticipate that there is going to be the need for several thousand people in the different countries,” Fukuda said.

….…..“The single most important (need) is that we don’t have enough people on the ground…these include health worker, nurses and doctors… people transporting people,” Fukuda said. ….

A scale-up is needed on the order of three to four times what is currently in place,” Chan said.
