If you take into consideration that they could have hundreds of attacks simultaneously then it would be very possible. But then it would not need to be all at once but more in waves. Hit several points and cause a panic and get response, hit more and cause chaos with less resources to respond, hit a little more and let the nation fight itself. When that all gets going establish your army and begin the fight.
You seem to forget. the only thing americans hate more than themselves are outsiders starting something. They tried to do a invasion americans will stop fighting each other and turn on the invaders. then after they are dead resume their battle with each other.

The public can't turn on other countries.
That's a government forces job.
At home, the people will be blowing each others heads off for food.

I wonder, out of all such warnings given by government officials over the past twenty or thirty years, how many of these attacks have actually come to pass?

So we have a "terror" group, bankrolled by the wests biggest regional ally, which has allegedly stolen 11 planes, and now the politicians are ramping up the fear factor again, at the same time as saying we should also bomb not only Iraq, but also Syria.
Funny that.
Cameron was stopped from bombing syria by Parliament, and now he seeks another avenue to do the same thing.
Little by little, liberties are corroded in the name of "security", and people actually welcome this.

Killing 9 of 10 does seem a bit high.
What has me confused is why would the Islamic State want to provoke the US into an armed fight at this point, if I were them I would consolidate my power and make sure I have firm footing and more supporters before poking the bear so to say

why do you feel they would be caught so easily? they wouldn't have to recruit people already in the position, just get a member to gain employment. And the point a lot of Americans are at with being fed up with the government may see a chance to stick it to Obama since they are calling him out.
Why do you think these guys don't know what they are doing? why does everyone assume that the enemy is a bunch of idiots?
