It is a total misnomer to imply that Europe relies on Russian imports of Gad - most of Western Europe hardly imports any. It is mainly the east and to a lesser extent Germany, but the flows can be reversed and imports can relatively easily be sourced from elsewhere.

On the flipside, Russia does import a huge amount from EU and Western nations, from heavy machinery, to food, to cars and everything in between, very little of which it can source from elsewhere and even if they can, it isn't anywhere near the same quality. Which is why, rather than the EU or US economy being "in the toilet" it is in fact Russia which has gone from strong growth last year to being in technical recession now, suffering massive capital flight and facing restrictions on obtaining capital for further internal growth.

As I understand it, the ships were just barebone hulls - no weapons and none of the equipment found on a French Mistral.
