I never realised that seeking a 2nd medical opinion, from a hospital of your choice was considered neglect or cruel in any way. Its frightening that an average family seemingly not known to social services could be treated in this way.

The uk "specialists" have given their diagnosis which is that there is no hope. The parents have discovered that the truth is, there is no hope while their son is being treated by the NHS. That is a slightly different statement than the first.

Perhaps the approved treatment in the EU, (is that assumption inaccurate?) won't help this little lad, keeping him in hospital while waiting for him to die is definately not going to help him. So why are the parents being punished? Why didn't southampton hospital explain clearly why they felt so strongly, then if the parents still wanted to have their son assessed abroad, liase with the new specialists. Southampton could easily have ensured this boys safe journey and transfer of care.

Given the circumstances as reported, why didn't the parents get legal help before they fled? Surely if they had spoken to a solicitor first, they could have ensured this didn't get out of hand? Human rights law seems to work very well for immigrants.

Could there be more to this than we are being made aware of?

Yes, it's strange, and the article points out that

In Britain, proton beam therapy is currently only available to treat certain patients with cancer in their eyes. Other countries, including the U.S., Switzerland and Japan, also use proton beam therapy to treat cancers of the spinal cord, brain, prostate, lung and those that affect children.

Britain's health department announced in 2011 it will build two treatment centers to make proton beam therapy available in London and Manchester from 2018. Until those facilities open, Britain will pay for patients eligible for the therapy to go to the U.S. and Switzerland for treatment.

It wasn't immediately clear why health care officials didn't make this option available to Aysha.

That's a very sad case of parents being stripped of their rights. We should be able to decide for ourselves what we feel is the best for our child. I hope and pray these parents will be 'permitted' to proceed with the proton beam therapy. If they are not allowed to enter the ward and see their son, that is most certainly NOT helpful to the child.

It's no different for adults either. Once you are admitted to a hospital, you lose control. I was in a long hospital stay a few years ago. I went outside to make a phone call one night and they sent security after me. I felt like I was in jail. I was completely miserable. I discovered some patients were allowed weekend home visits and asked if I may have these as well. There needed to be a big meeting to allow it. You must return by 10 pm Sunday evening and if you are late, they send cops. Some patients would say they were late and had cops come to their house.

You are their property.

Then I started nagging about a discharge date. Others were getting them, why wasn't i? In one month we all noticed a lot were getting discharged, I was due to be, but they cancelled it, said wait another month. I complained, I'm not an idiot, I think you need so many patients in this place to meet your quota to receive government grants and suddenly I was just a number messing that up, because you've not been taking in many new patients lately. They needed so many patients per therapists working there or therapists need to be relieved of their jobs. So these therapists write in their reports this patient still needs help. When the day before they had just informed me you are now heady to leave.

Leaving was a whole other set of rules. The home inspection, questions like do you have any firearms on the premises. We hear you have a cat and that thing can go. No way! Ok you can keep the dumb cat. He was just a kitten and during the inspection I put him in a little Easter basket on the table so he looked extra cute and wasn't running around. He behaved and passed the inspection to keep him.

I was probably the most outspoken bitch they ever encountered.

Not if the parents are misinformed and are - as appears to be the case here - making decisions which are not in the best interests of the child, but on their own opinion.

There is no more important opinion than that of the parents.

This is all about MONEY!
If that child were to get treatment outside of the uk that was beneficial, there would be a flood of parents wanting the same treatment.

The day you register your child's birth they own it by law - you just feed the up-coming tax payer to be until he get's a national insurance number .

They broke no law's yet are in jail

A parents job is to be an advocate for their child. A good advocate needs to be educated on the situation and understand all the options available in order to make good choices.

I'm also very curious how many times this Dr. Has been mugged based on his bedside manner. It would seem he's not very pleasant.

The Parents are not misinformed, actually it seems the Doctors are more misinformed than the Parents in regards to this case.

Proton Beam Therapy is not a controversial whack job snake oil treatment. It is a Genuine Therapy that is being used more and more for certain cancers in other Countries. If it was something that doesn't work, the NHS would not be spending millions to build two treatment centres and funding candidates to go to the US and Switzerland until these treatment centres are built.

A Doctor in Prague has stated that they will treat Ashya with Proton Beam treatment immediately if he is eligable. This is the only shining light on this situation at the moment.

If Ashya is found to be eligable and it is found the UK Doctors had stated to the family that Ashya wasn't eligable, the UK Doctors are going to have massive egg on their faces.

If Ashya is not found eligable, then atleast they got the chance to be able to find out by Doctors that are actually experienced in Proton Beam Therapy that the poor boy has no hope at all.

The prognosis the Southampton General Doctors gave the parents were; He can have Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy (which will fry his brain to the point of severe brain damage). But the Tumour they operated on will likely come back and he has 4 months to live.

If you were a Parent of such a poor young soul, wouldn't you not want to try everything possible? The Proton Beam Therapy is their last hope. Would you not want to atleast try if you were in the same situation?

The sad fact is, because of all of this red tape overkill a young Boy has been seperated from his Parents and Siblings in his last months.

Hold on so the child isn't getting treatment else where by another hospital in another country due to the parent surfin the net for alternatives?

Can you back up what you are saying that it appears to be case here?

Haven't really read the story in depth so don't know the details other than what I have heard on the news and read here, but isn't the treatment not approved in the UK but is in other European countries, the doctors in the UK said there is nothing else they can do and the child needs to stay there and well pretty much die instead of trying another treatment available elsewhere?

How are the parents wrong in this case, maybe they are, maybe they went about wrong and are right, so can you back up your words that the parents are not making decisions in the best interest of their child?

No, the parents' right to protect their child trumps anyone else's opinion.

Except when that directly results in the child's death:

A Pennsylvania mother and father who believe in faith-healing were sent to jail Wednesday for causing the death of their young, sick child by refusing to take him to the doctor. It was the second of Herbert and Catherine Schaible’s children to die under their care.

time.com...

Do you think these parents had a right to kill their child through their ignorance and negligence, Mary?

The Parents in the case you linked to were relying on Faith Healing and refused to take their Child for Medical Treatment

The King Family were relying on REAL Medcial treatment that has been tried and tested and is being used in Hospitals in Europe, Japan and the USA after they were told by the Doctors that were already treating him that he would likley only have 4 months left to live even with the standard Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy treatment, which is all they were offering.

Two completely different situations that cannot be compared.

The comment was "No, the parents' right to protect their child trumps anyone else's opinion".

Therefore, by this logic, their right to "protect" their child through faith healing trumps medical opinion.

this is a tricky one.....

A child under intensive care, strict medicinal and dietary routine is dissappears from a hospital...panic ensues.

CCTV is checked and the child is seen being taken by the parents....confusion

Parents are Jehovas witnesses, known to withold certain medical treatments from children (JW's in general, not specificaly these parents)....manhunt.

THIS POINT IN THE TIMING IS IMPORTANT.

You see later, it transpires that the parents were seeking treatment abroad and had provided all of the required treatments and foodstuffs for the child. They havnt been charged, and most likley wont be as the only thing they did wrong was to not inform the proffesionals that had been charged with providing care for their child, and that is not ileagle.

Now go back anr re-read the post up to the first CAPITALISED sentence and tell me that you wouldnt havse been p155ed off if things had happend diferently.
