Just in.

In respons to the recent situation in Ukraine Sweden has decided to raise it´s military alertness and has moved part of its airforce to Gotland, an island in the Baltic Sea. This is alson in respons to the recent air intrution by two Russian bombers model TU-22 Backfire escorted by 2 fighterjets type SU-27 Flanker. Also, Finland has reportet violation by Russian airforce three times the last week.

Our Foreignminister of Sweden. Carl Bildt has confirmed this news via Twitter saying "Our defenceforce is heighten its headquarters compund and intelligence agency alertness. Gripen (JAS Gripen/Phoenix) is relocated to Gotland"

So here we go? Even Sweden is now placing its chess pieces, allthough its just a "better be safe than sorry"-move, it is still there.

That´s true, and it is exactly that snippet of historical fact that made me post this. But I am pretty sure that during the Cold war our military here in sweden was way more alert than now. We will see just how cold Cold war 2.0 is going to be.

Here's one in English

STOCKHOLM - Sweden put its top military staff on higher alert on Friday as a result of the situation in Ukraine, the armed forces said. It is already participating in international manoeuvres in Finland, which borders Russia, and has moved its quick-response fighter jets to the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, off Sweden's southeast coast.

The past 72 hours have seen pro-Russian rebels suddenly open a new front and push Ukrainian troops out of a key town. Kiev and Western countries say the reversal was the result of the arrival of armoured columns of Russian troops. Moscow publicly denies its forces are fighting to support pro-Russian rebels. — Reuters

Russia has been actively violating Finnish airspace whole summer, not all the time clearly inside finish airspace, but just in line or bit inside the line, only couple times violation has been clear.
Russia has had a much " rehearsals " in the Baltic Sea and ATM Russia is testing their new line of submarines in there.

While the Russians are testing their submarines in the Baltic Sea, Finland is hosting Northern Coasts-crisis Management drill in the Baltic Sea and there are many NATO countries attending the drill with Sweden and Finland.

Expect some rush hours..

Apart from all the War's they've been involved in during the 19th centuries, a couple in the 20th and the one's they are currently involved in, yeah, Sweden hasn't had a War since the 1700's................

Anyhoo, this is a sensible precaution for the Swedes to take - Russia has form in that part of the world and their recent actions call for a stern approach.

Was it not NATO who sent subs to Sweden to try to scare them into joining? I recall the inquiries concluding some of them couldnt have been Soviet. I think that was the highest alert Sweden ever saw

there's no swedish indignation on NSA spying , which is worse than a few stray planes..

oh i forgot, if It is US Spying on its friends then it is consensual, if russian did it then it is rape..

what a great hypocritical indignation for swedish goverment..

Russia claims to always be upset by NATO expansion but, they are driving new members in with their foolish actions. Sweden Finland increase NATO ties Finland is a nation that has bent over backwards to avoid trouble with Russia but, Russia is pretty much in a if your not protected by NATO your a target mode. Montenegro, Macedonia, and Bosnia have all been waiting to get in. Bosnia's internal issue delay it. Macedonia's name dispute delays it. Montenegro will be in within the next couple of years. Now NATO seems to also have Ukraine, Georgia, Modova in line with Sweden, Finland and Azerbaijan not far behind.

Russia is going end up with NATO going from 28 members to 37 with most of them joining in reaction to Russia's actions.

you are assuming russia is the agressor , which is the NATO's fictional narrative to justify their existence.

there wont be peace if NATO keep pushing eastwards.. this will be by the russians as pretext for invasion by western forces just like the last war..

I don't think anyone is "assuming" Russia is the aggressor, but rather observing the fact that Russia is behaving aggressively.

Countries are free to choose who they align themselves with and not amount of throwing a fit, bitching about "promises made" or harking back to the "good old days of Mother Russia" will change that. Russia has to accept that it's former satellites are no longer under it's control and behaving like the big dick on campus only pushes people away, not draw them in.

I dont see NATO sending troops into Ukraine or supplying weapons to rebel fighters there. I dont see NATO annexing another countries territory like Russia has done in Georgia and Ukraine. And it some how amazes You that all Russia neighbors are nervousand you think thats because of propaganda? Wow really?

Latvia ex-PM may succeed Van Rompuy as president of European Council

Interesting,timing,,

Valdis Dombrovskis
is a Latvian politician who served as Prime Minister of Latvia from 2009 until 2014,
when he resigned. He served as Minister of Finance
from 2002 to 2004 and was a Member of the

European Parliament for the New Era Party.

Former Latvian prime minister Valdis Dombrovskis
is emerging as a major contender to succeed

Herman Van Rompuy

as president of the European Council but member states are still deadlocked over the nomination.

The lack of consensus means the name of Taoiseach Enda Kenny remains under quiet discussion in diplomatic circles, although close associates insist he has no interest in the job.

The nominee’s task is to chair summits whenever the leaders of the 28 member states gather and seek agreement among leaders in advance of such meetings. The mandate is for 2½ years.

New Era Party sounds like new world order stuff.

I wonder if Luxenburg/Brussils are still calling the behind the scean strings?

now Sweden,,hmmm

ohh Latvia,,,

Latvia, officially the Republic of Latvia,
is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe,
one of the three Baltic states.
It is bordered by Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Belarus

yeah,, so if the # starts Belguim can say,, "hey it wasnt us" it was Latvia,, i guess.

I don't worry too much, people in Russia are so patriotic, they endure the higher prizes for their food., Turkey and China are very unstable partners, if there were some real war-activities going on, the sweet Chinese would invade East-Russia, they already got their eyes laid on that.

What's this "Here we go" business..?

Not just you but everyone else.. I can't count the number of times I read it, since I joined ATS.

"Here we go.." about some sort of pending doom.

Military activities have been pretty much constant for a while; no indication of a war.

I would like to think that we live in different times.. a bit more civil; especially amongst first world nations. (Well maybe some nations are questionable in that regard.)

I think the whole Crimea situation was blown out of proportion. They were protecting interests there after the gov't was overturned, and it was not an aggressive move. In the end after the truce, Crimean voters overwhelmingly favored joining Russia by a vote of more than 95 percent of referendum ballots. - abcnews.go.com...

I think now the US is using these events to fulfill other agendas.

Just to add - its strange how the US and EU supported and favored a coup d'état government in Crimea which overwhelmingly was not favored by the people who live there.

You mean the fake vote they held in Crimea? Russia rigged the vote you do realize they had a turnout of 123 percent of registered voters. The Crimea vote was decided before it started by a few individuals in charge. The voting only required a Russian passport this means all the military they had stationed in crimea at the time could vote. Wonder how they would vote?? Oh and just because someone is ethnically Russian doesnt mean they wanted to join Russia but Russia wants us to believe that not only 100 percent of them voted to leave but also 100 percent of the Ukrainians as well and apparently the Tartars just were not represented or allowed to vote?? Not like it was a surprize however you had armed Russian troops on the streets causing people to vote the way they expected. There were attacks on non ethnic Russians and well now there is a lot of regret goingon in Crimea as there entire way of life falls apart. Good thing about it is Russia is creating a humanitarian crises in Crimea and this will mean next time they try this they will be rebuked. Days of Russia pulling off the soft invasion are over no one wil buy that anymore.

As much as I would love to see Putin take a bite out of NATO and the west to put us in our place for once they'd never stand a chance against Europe and the US.
