Ukraine says captured 'Russian soldiers' ahead of key talks

Donetsk (Ukraine) (AFP) - Kiev's security service on Monday said its army in the war-torn east has captured 10 Russian paratroopers on Ukrainian soil, ramping up tensions on the eve of crunch talks on the conflict.

Soldiers from the 98th airborne division based in central Russia were captured near the Ukrainian village of Dzerkalne, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) southeast of the rebel hub Donetsk, Ukraine's security service (UBS) said in a statement.

"Investigators opened a criminal probe into illegal border crossing by Russian armed citizens," it added.

The news comes just hours before Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is due to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin for the first time in months alongside top EU officials in Minsk on Tuesday.

Ukraine's Defence Minister Valeriy Geletey said the soldiers had been captured on Monday.

"Today Ukrainian armed forces captured many Russian soldiers," Geletey wrote on his Facebook page.

"Officially they are at exercises in various corners of Russia. In reality, they are participating in military aggression against Ukraine" and their families know nothing about their true fate, he said.

"I am addressing the relatives of Russian servicemen: find out immediately where your loved ones are. Take them out of Ukraine, where they are being forced to die," he added.

Kiev has long accused Moscow of stoking the separatist insurgency raging in its east but this is the first time Ukrainian authorities have claimed to take soldiers from Russia's regular army captive.

Fuuny enough -

Earlier on Monday, Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said troops had halted a column of tanks and armoured personal carriers flying rebel flags from Russia heading towards the government-held port city of Mariupol.

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov dismissed the claims, saying "there has been more than enough disinformation about our invasion. No doubt some foreign newspaper will print that 'news' tomorrow".

So no new aid.. ok... except for -

An AFP journalist witnessed heavy fighting to the south of Donetsk, the main rebel bastion in eastern Ukraine, where separatists said they had deployed fresh tanks and artillery.

Ooooo.. so close Russia... swing and a miss.

Once again Russia is caught with its hands in Ukraine and continues to lie about it.

Question - If Putin is so popular at home, and has almost complete support from the Russian people, then why does he hide his actions in Ukraine? Who is he lying to? The Russian people, the world, or both?

* - Why lie to the Russian people back at home? They completely support him and his actions, so there should be no need to hide military actions by the Russian army from the Russian people. Right?

* - If Russia does not care what the remainder of the world thinks then why lie about its involvement in Ukraine.

What does Russia have to fear?

I give him full credit. I won't say he's lying. In fact, his actions are more transparent than those of the 0bama administration. Putin's got a plan, he's executing it, and he's going to win.

The big difference is he's simply not talking about it ... Just gettin' 'er done.

Poroshenko on Monday dissolved Ukraine's parliament and called early elections, accusing some lawmakers of supporting the rebellion in the east

Ha so we know what happened to those in Parliament. He dressed them in Russian uniforms and then arrested them.

Since this is ATS pics or it didn't happen or in this case pics or it's just more Ukrainian propaganda. Surely someone had a camera phone.

Still it's possible guess we'll see if they come up with verifiable documentation. If they do I wonder what Putin will say to Poroshenko when they meet. Old Poroshenko may be the next one running for the Ukraine border in a westerly direction.

Poroshenko will dress them up like dolls, make them put on Russian kit, (make sure they speak Russian of course), give - them some stories to tell - using as much truth as possible except for the key lies they'll need to talk about. A few tears and blabbing will work wonders too. Oh, and a few "relatives" will be the clincher.

Perfect for the US audience, State Department and many in the EU. Thankfully, many peeps know the truth, despite the authoritarian efforts the seem so endemic in western "liberal democratic" societies. (Their hypocritical nature being well demonstrated in their refusal to publish the MH17 crash report, the US military occupation of Ferguson, protection of the banking/financial elites etc).

The Bandera fascists and their apologists can put on all the pretty shows they want... Novorossiya Armed Forces have more serious issues to consider. Like stopping the genocide against Russian ethnic group.

What a moron.

You call a couple of rebels, the Russian army. First of all, Russia has full reason to invade Ukraine, but doesn't.

But you want to provoke them?` Let me try to inform you what a full scale war with Russia means. Within 24 hours, Ukraine would fall ... with hundreds of thousands of casualties the first day. This would be the result of their air strikes, to take out stragedic Ukrainian positions. Followed by an invasion, that would take out the remaining ground forces and their supporters. In a week, you'd have millions fleeing to the west, with huge casualties. After which, there would be no Ukraine.

Is that happening right now? no. Are you so ignorant and stupid, that you want to provoke that to happen?

There would be nothing, neither US or EU could do to stop it. They already have sanctions on Russia, more sanctions wouldn't have any effect. Any American troops, would create a nuclear retaliation ... which EU wouldn't stand for, as it would cause enormous EU casualties from the fallout.

You'd be dead, and burried and nobody to help you ...

But thank God, that isn't happening ... and I'd suggest you'd have a talk with those moron fascists in Kiev, to get them in line and stop provoking the situation towards that end.

Here is video. LINK The Russians have changed the story from them not being there to they were there by accident. Its seems among the Russian paras some are sticking to the story they were just lost and others that they are there as cannon fodder and saying this not their war. Either way we have one of Russias elite units either completely lost (something we saw happen among regular units a great deal in Georgia) which would be very humilitating for Russia or we have direct Russian involment instead just arms and volunteers. The one thing we can tell for sure is the morale in Russian miltary is still very poor even among their elite units. Something they were suppose to fix with that last round of reforms.

They have released full video of the Russian Para-Military unit. Russia has acknowledged it grudgingly, saying they just got lost on patrol and wandered (30 miles) across the border.

And Russia would immediately be thrown back into a full cold war, isolated when their economy is already suffering and stumbling. They would own Ukraine and then Russia would collapse within 5 years.

And...Once Russia starts on the path of re-invading former satellite republics with the aim of rebuilding it's empire...All hell breaks loose with countries like Poland, Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Serbia et al.

Provoke Russia?? Are you kidding me? What the eff do you think is happening in Ukraine?

You do realize there is nothing "wild" about the accusations? Video, plus Russia being forced to admit it?

Glad to see the Putin's propaganda machine still has plenty of customers...

"Wild Accusations"....LOL

Yeah I saw that earlier today. In this case it has been verified. Good enough.

One of the soldiers says they were "lost" and wandered over the border. Possible but in the current situation it doesn't really matter. They would perhaps have been better served by getting "lost" with an addition couple of infantry companies and a tank battalion.

30 miles is a stretch for being "lost". Even more so when you have conflicting stories by those captured.

Also they are airborne troops. Land navigation proficiency is a requirement.

Since Russia has admitted their troops were in Ukraine how about an apology being you were completely wrong. Perhaps you should research before running your mouth.

I know, never said I believed the story they were lost. Just that in the current situation it is irrelevant anyway. Also pretty sure even basic Russian infantry soldiers get map reading and compass training.
