Four guys at North Carolina State University are doing something proactive (and unorthodox): inventing a nail polish that can detect date rape drugs.

Source

Many have spoken out against the epidemic of sexual assault on college campuses, and many others have spoken out against the booze-fueled party culture in which sexual assaults often take place and the “progressivism” that blurs distinctions between different kinds of assault.
While the pundits and policymakers debate the issue, four guys at North Carolina State University are doing something proactive (and unorthodox): inventing a nail polish that can detect date rape drugs.

This is a genius idea. The fear of being drugged and raped is huge on college campuses.

Those guys will make bank.

If it works by changing colors, then it would serve to alert that girl and her friends and might well be a genius preventative measure. It will be most interesting to see what comes of this.

College and beyond-----it's a PITA to have to finish your entire margarita before being able to go to the bathroom while your BFF is off dancing with some dude. It would be nice to not have to chug-a-lug just to be safe, lol.

Or people can follow their common sense.

Do not take drinks from strangers.

When geting drinks, watch it being poured from the bottle.

Know when to stop drinking.

Have good friends with you and never go alone.

I have yet to meet a girl that tries to put something in my drink.

While I do think this is a great idea, I still see it happening occasionally.
Some college girls just drink to much. We just had one die this weekend from alcohol. I can't see a young lady remembering to do this, after one to many.

But really a good start.

a reply to: ProphetZoroasterIf you are out with a bunch of guys who might look like they may rape you! you better just get away from them as soon as possible and if it happens you can not leave for any reason the last thing you want to do is to be sober and awake when the action happens,,unless of course you are a porn star.

This is great news. I am a victim of being drugged and raped. It was years ago but the assualt changed my life. I suffered pts and became very afraid of men. I later discovered that the bartender was in on drugging me

or at least knew what was about to go down. People think drugging someone is a joke and that they deserve it somehow. Life can be cruel at times.

This is a neat idea, they've already created straws that'll change color when in contact with certain drugs.

The problem is, if you've had a few to many -- are you going to be paying close attention to the color of your nails or your straw?

I was also under the impression that "date rape" drugs are very hard to come by, and most aren't even being manufactured anymore?

If anything -- alcohol itself is the most dangerous date rape drug in and of itself!

They have had straws that do this for years now.

I know, right? And who wants to watch women dip their fingers in their drinks...? Gross.

The more I think about this, the more odd/strange it sounds.

"Becky, what shade were your nails supposed to *burp* be?"

"I...I dunno. OMG I think I'm going to yak!"

I think the straw idea is better.

Sigh.

The victim-blaming in this thread is just disgusting.

"A few too many" means you don't try to have sex with her, IF YOU ARE A RESPECTFUL, HONORABLE, AND LAW-ABIDING MAN.

Having sex with someone who is too incapacitated to say "no" with a clear mind is called RAPE.

That's why it's illegal to have sex with coma patients, the mentally-disabled, and children.

Shame on you.

Shame. On. You.

If by someone administering drugs I totally agree. If someone goes out and gets tanked of their own accord and then the inhibitions go out the window, no. That's not rape. Though I'm sure there's more than one dude sitting in jail over someone regretting the amount they drank.

Edit: MODERATORS, even. My God. You're supposed to set an example. Jesus H. I hope you don't have daughters.

I agree, drunk sex is not rape, unless someone was passed out. I get hammered and punch someone light's out, I am responsible. I get hammered and drive my truck into someone's livingroom, I am responsible. Yet I have drunk sex, suddenly responsibility goes out the window? Nah, I don't buy it.

People with your mindset are the problem, promoting getting drunk and fall into prey for vultures.

RESPECTFUL, HONORABLE, AND LAW-ABIDING MAN would not rape.

The people doing the rape aren't those, so generalziing men is not going to help your cause, its only going to hurt by pushing Men away and labelling you as an rabid illogical femnazi.

You cant fix mentally ill. Rapist will rape and serial killers will kill, its not something you can teach. Because people that do those things chose not to listen, and generalizing "MEN"" hurts people who do not.

Also to add a RESPECTFUL, HONORABLE, SMART WOMAN would not put her in a stupid situation.

Sorry, but you are incorrect as per the legal statute:

“The FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Advisory Policy Board recently recommended the adoption of a revised definition of rape within the Summary Reporting System of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program,” said David Cuthbertson, FBI Assistant Director, CJIS Division. “This definitional change was recently approved by FBI Director Robert S. Mueller. This change will give law enforcement the ability to report more complete rape offense data, as the new definition reflects the vast majority of state rape statutes. As we implement this change, the FBI is confident that the number of victims of this heinous crime will be more accurately reflected in national crime statistics.”

The revised definition includes any gender of victim or perpetrator, and includes instances in which the victim is incapable of giving consent because of temporary or permanent mental or physical incapacity, including due to the influence of drugs or alcohol or because of age. The ability of the victim to give consent must be determined in accordance with state statute. Physical resistance from the victim is not required to demonstrate lack of consent. The new definition does not change federal or state criminal codes or impact charging and prosecution on the local level.

Sorry, but you're LEGALLY wrong. Please do not encourage other members on this forum to rape people just because they are "drunk." That holds you, as a "super-mod" legally responsible too.

Your statute doesn't meet what we are talking about. I'm not talking about drugging a woman and raping her. I'm not talking about a man raping an incapacitated(passed out) woman. I'm talking about a woman that had a damn good time. Probably more than she was used to and did things she later regrets. THAT is not rape. And WHEN does "no" come into play? After you've been grinding your butt against his junk for 20 minutes? Hey, when I turn a key in a car I expect it to start. What the hell would you expect?

I think you missed the key word 'incapacitated', therefore there can be no consent.

I understand what you are saying, but LEGALLY if a woman is "too drunk to say no with a clear mind", regardless of whether she is "passed out" or not, it is RAPE. Period. You cannot argue that the FBI-accepted statute requires "being passed out." That was ALREADY rape before the statute.

Edit: but seriously, "grinding her butt against you"???? That does not mean she wants to have sex with you. I grind my butt against my BFF girlfriends (I'm a chick) on Saturday night when we go to the club. It doesn't mean I necessarily want to have sex with her. It's dancing. Get over it.
