I was just trying to say my lanterns didn't make it too far. I also think mine only stayed lit for about five minutes. Maybe they got ripped off like I did.

Nice work on the bird looking thing. That's an XJSparrow, top secret CIA hole jumper. But in all seriousness. I have no experience with chinese lanterns but that explanation does seem to make the most sense.

Uh, isn't the flame required to keep it aloft?

It will drop as the air cools but not instantly.
