Those guys are just show-offs. The best bass players in the world are (and were) people like James Jamerson and Paul McCartney.

Very true. My favorite players usually are jazz bass players. although Some good old Fugazi/punk bass lines are just amazing. You can tell who plays with emotion vs just slap the bass as fast as you can.

I'll throw in Marcus Miller, Bootsy Collins and Buckethead on bass is just as awesome as when he's on guitar.
