The Italian Air Force has confirmed that two Tornado fighters, on a routine training flight, have collided and crashed in the Italian countryside. The flight was near the Ascoli area, to the north of Rome.

Both aircraft exploded on impact with the ground, starting a fire. Search and Rescue and firefighting aircraft are on scene now, looking for the crews, and fighting the fire. Each aircraft was crewed by a pilot, and navigator/weapons system operator. It's unclear what happened to the crews at this point.

Two Italian military jets collided during a 19 August afternoon training flight, the country’s air force has confirmed.

A pair of twin-engined Panavia Tornado jet aircraft were “carrying out a training mission” when they collided and crashed, according to the air force’s official Twitter account. Reports say the aircraft were in the vicinity of Ascoli, in eastern Italy north of Rome.

Both aircraft were crewed by pilots and navigators, but Italian authorities have not confirmed their fate.

It's being suggested by witnesses that they may have made contact with each other at low level. One witness said it appeared their wingtips touched. Reports are that the crews ejected, but are currently missing.

My heart and prayers to the pilots and their families. I hope they do find the pilots. I'm amazed the pilots managed to eject in time. Great reflexes. I wonder how much time they had to think before impact.

It's confusing because some reports say they may have ejected, and others say there were no chutes seen by witnesses. But if they did get out, then it was most likely because of the back seaters. They would have been watching separation of the two aircraft, and noticed they were drifting closer and yelled a warning.

It's not looking good for the crews. There haven't been any updates in hours, and no reports of the crews being found.

Not looking good at all. At least one body has been found still inside the wreckage:

With the size of the fire ball in mid air, it looks like they hit each other with some serious force. More than just a wing tip strike while flying in formation. Looks almost like they were in a scissors or a merge at the time of impact.

Oh wow! Those pictures are an eye-opener.

Sad no crew survived. On the bright side, I'm glad no one from the village was hurt. Makes you wonder how much damage the nearby village took if any from debris and fire.

Thanks for the update link, Zaphod.

The remains of two crew members have been recovered, the other two are still missing. One of the crew members was a female pilot that flew missions with NATO over Libya.

No radar coverage in the area due to the mountains in the area. Its too earthy to say for certain, but almost always in accidents like this its pilot error.
