In 864 years someone will rediscover this thread like an ancient tablet....

You shall be the Nostradamus of their time.....

In 865 years you will be debunked as somewhere on it's way here the asteroid 1950 DA is hit by another asteroid and changed course...

They will burn your computer and start a new golden age of exploration!

I don't know what the earth will look like 800+ years from now.

I imagine Cher might look a little older, Lois Lerner's emails will still be missing, Justin Beiber will still be irritating, but aside from that, we might not have the technology to avert an asteroid impact.

Thus as Beezzerdomus (thanks Darkblade71!) I am giving warning now!

Before it is too late.

At the rate our technology is advancing, we'll be living on other planets by then. Taking care of that meteor will be like swatting an annoying fly. Nothing to worry about here.

Did you factor in leap years and daylight savings time?

At the rate our technology is advancing, we will have already blown ourselves back to the Stone Age, and by 2879 will only finally be discovering the ancient scripts we find hidden in deep burrows underground...beside the remains of fossilized carrots. Without some help, doom will be upon us.

Beezer, for the future of Earth, leave a translation guide for god's sake!

Meanwhile, a bit off-topic, I found evidence of rabbit invasion in the peanut patch, I think they are camping my carrrots but are afraid to cross thru the pepper patch to get to them....the red line has been drawn...tomorrrow I will pepper-spray the peanut patch, and see which one of you critters come back here with the burn...I will flush out the culprit. War is declared.

(the last paragraph is entirely true...well...almost...)

It's okay.

There are 3 types of people in the world. Those that know maths and those that don't.

You are misunderstanding the gifts that those of the Bunny Clan have bestowed upon you. All they ask are a few offerings.

I am planning for future generations by carving a message about a "boom" rock coming from the sky-gods to bring darkness and rain unless bunny rabbits are worshiped and adored.

"Researchers at the University of Tennessee have discovered that blowing the space rock up could make the collision worse by causing several devastating impacts."

Really, I'm pretty sure the people that played as Nasa scientists in Armageddon had already come up with that theory...

They were studying asteroid 1950 DA, which has a one in 300 chance of hitting the planet on 16 March, 2880.

Islam should have taken over the planet by then, so this may be a good thing.

Naw, Christianity will never relinquish its stranglehold.

Finished with your doom porn..?

Destroy the Earth..? Wipe out all life..?

Not a chance. Not even close.

Asteroid 1950 DA is 1.1km across (still pretty big and going to do a hell of a lot of damage), but end life on earth it will not.

Worst case scenario damage report... Hypothetically if you live 16,000km from the impact site and it hits with a 45 degree entry angle at 24km sec we will experience the following....

An energy release of 10 to the power of 5 megatons of TNT, Global Damage will be very little. The Earths axis will be tilted by about 300ths of a degree and the orbit will not be effected to any noticeable degree.

The end crater will be about 600m deep and 15km wide.

At a range of 16,000km there won't be any fire ball (too bad for those at ground zero and within 900km tho)..

Any ejecta will be mostly micro-dust and the covering of fallout will be around 20cm.

Airburst at 16,00km will be like a gentile breeze and even at 2000km will be no more different than a regular, run-o-the mill Hurricane.

The only noticeable effect "of initial impact", of any real worry at 16,000km will be the seismic disturbance which will be around 7. something.

Tsunami (if it landed in water), at 16,000km will arrive in about 30 hrs, travelling at several hundred km per hour and will be about 1m high. It will not get too far inland, nor do a huge amount of damage to coastal regions.

Long term effects... Different story, but still not the end of all things. Nuclear (without the radiation), winter will ensue for several years and parts of the world will freeze over.

Millions will die during and in the years after impact. There will be untold extinctions of species (mankind won't be one of them), but the world and civilisation will definitely survive to face extinction another day.

People these days just watch too many "over-exaggerated", Hollywood disaster movies....lol

Don't worry bud. Global Warming... err Climate Change will have killed us all long before that! Actually according to their predictions we should already be dead from it, shouldn't we?

We are all dead, but because of global warming we are all having too good of a time at the beach sunbathing and drinking beer to have noticed

Good post. I guess we have a real date to shoot for in the future for getting programs off the ground. I think we could easily be ready by then. Future generations just need to take it serious. Its not an if it will happen its a when.
