I have a sculpture in the yard that is made from a piece of driftwood. It was made about 10 years ago and had been inside my house up until last summer, when I decided it would look nice in the yard. It's been fine for most of that time, but today, while watering the plants and sweeping up the yard, I peaked behind the sculpture to pick up some leaves and this is what I found

With that sticky secretion?

I'm not a bug guy. Have and had all sorts of critters, reef tanks, dogs, cats and even bug eating things which I dreaded feeding LOL I'm not sure what to make of these or what to do about them yet. I can see there's some wood that's been excavated from the piece. Guessing termites. I'll have to hit it with an insecticide and then patch and repair. Just not sure what those creepy things are and how to deal with them.

I'm wondering if it some kind of nest? Wood boring bees or wasps? Don't want to mess with that if it is.

Did you try poking it with a stick?

It looks like a slug with bacteria infection or maybe some kind of bug nest / cacoon thing.

Go poke it with a stick.

Fungal extracellular enzyme activity

Extracellular enzymes or exoenzymes are synthesized inside the cell and then secreted outside the cell, where their function is to break down complex macromolecules into smaller units to be taken up by the cell for growth and assimilation.[1] These enzymes degrade complex organic matter such as cellulose and hemicellulose into simple sugars that enzyme-producing organisms use as a source of carbon, energy, and nutrients
