It could have just been a radio. Some vacuum tubes were miniaturized to about the size of the tip of a pinky finger or one of those miniature holiday
lights. And it only takes 5 to 7 of those to make a working radio amplifier. Of course they weren't anywhere as common or cheap as the transistor
radios of the 1960's, but there are "Tom Thumb" or "Midget" models which could be considered to be a hand-held size.
