a reply to: funkadeliaaaa Military already has spy camera's with resolutions of 1.8 Billion pixels + ( link ). The synapse chip might provide improvements in the processing of pictures (drastic improvements in exposure settings etc.).

I think the holly grail in AI will come from DNA (Not to be confused necessarily with DNA computing as of today). Where a human or artificially created DNA strand will be utilized to achieve unique behavior,learning and influence the decision making process.

Although the neurosynaptic chips will not bring us any closer to any sort of AI, they will definitely take us to the next level of networked automation and control and will tuck that process away more seamlessly in to our environment than ever before.

Very exciting stuff.

400,000,000 bits of on board memory

400,000,000 / 8 = 50,000,000 bytes

50,000,000 bytes / 1000 = 50,000 megabytes

50,000 megabytes / 1000 = 50 Gigabytes of on board memory at 28 nanometers... on a chip with 4.7 Billion transistors...

Allow me to analyze that statement with pictures...







Xbox one CPU has 47 Megabytes of cache/eSRAM on its big 5 billion transistor CPU and look at the chunk of space it takes up...

I just don't see it happening...

the true test of any super computer is how fast can it factorise a number. This is because there is no known formula that you can you use to factorise. For example the factors of 15 is 3 and 5, factors of 27 is 3 and 9 etc etc. This is quite easy for a human brain but highly difficult for a supercomputer. Any computer that does not utilise quantum effects will not achieve the speeds a human brain can to do factorisation.

The estimated operating speed of the brain is estimated as 100,000,000,000,000 otherwise known as 100 trillion synapse operations per second (SOP's). The human brain is estimated (from different sources to run from 12.6 - 30 watts).

This chip is capable of 46 Billion SOP's a watt. But the chip only runs at 70 milliwatts...

1 watt divided by 70 milliwats is 14.28.

soo 100 trillion sops divided by 46 billion sops is : 2173.91.

2173.91 of these processors run at 70 millwatts. We need them running at a watt for equal performance.

2173.91 x 14.28 = 31043.4348

We need 31044 of these processors to equal the estimated running speed of the human brain.

This is easily do-able. go on IBM. Create an artifical intelligence with human brain performace... Singularity here we come ;-p

I'm sure it could run crysis ;-p

Don't forget it's not just about the processing speed but how the processing is done and this is an area where the brain excels because of how we process information.

The brain not only processes information in linear fashion but also spatially often creating associations where you would not expect and performing analysis in ways that traditional system of processing do not (human and machine).

The IBM chip however is fascinating in that it opens up the possibility of building some kind of quantum state based processor or machine that could emulate how our brain works (and subsequently our minds) and I believe in time we will enhance our minds by augmenting these kinds of machines.

It has a million neurons (brain cells), 256 million synapses, and 4,096 neurosynaptic cores, arranged in a 64 x 64 array. It has 400 million bits of local on-chip memory. The cores can be connected via a network on a chip.



Because the brain has more than 10 billion neuron and 10 trillion connections (synapses) between those neurons, that amounts to an enormous amount of computing power.
