No, I don't believe that it is private. No, I don't believe I can do whatever I like with their free email. Where are all these accusations coming from?? I never claimed such a thing. Heck, I don't even use Gmail

Hmm. Is that not the main argument of your post?

Edit: OK in your original post to me you claimed I was accusing you of something so I mistook you for being the original poster that is my mistake. But from what I understand you are in defense of this argument that Google is invading your freedoms in having a computer scan for child pornography. Is that not why you posted toward me, claiming I was accusing you of such things in my post toward the OP?

No, I simply took umbrage at your idea that by being an advocate for privacy, one was somehow enabling or causing child abuse. You were clearly upset about it, to the point of "screwing" freedom & liberty. I didn't and don't agree.

No I don't think Google is "invading" my freedoms. I have no illusions about Google, and most, if not all other email providers, scanning (or allowing access for other authorities) my data. The legal language and the terms & conditions don't allow for total privacy.

But yes, I think privacy is important and should be... well, protected. It's complicated, and I don't have an easy solution or answer. Especially in these times of high-technology.

I'm against child abuse. I'm for privacy and freedom and liberty. Can't we be against one, and for the other, and figure out ways to minimize abuse and maximize privacy & freedom?

I never suggested freedom means people can do whatever they want. But people often do exactly that - they do whatever they want (because their freedom has extended beyond conscience, consequence, and notions of goodness), and children end up getting molested. Society's role is to make sure those molesters face the consequences of their actions, whether that is incarceration, execution, or (in the case of a degraded and corrupt society) a slap on the hand.

well..... You don't really own, your gmail, hotmail, yahoo, aim, msn accounts. It's a free service provided by the website on the premise that you view the adds, articles, etc they host.

You borrow the account, it's not "Yours," and as long as that service remains free and you have agreed to their terms(which you do by owning the account/signing up) you have a pretty minimal right to privacy from the provider. Sure they may off you a level of privacy from other users, but from the provider all content exchanged or stored with in is equally theirs as much as it is yours.

This.

It's like almost anything else in life. Like your house for example. You technically don't own your house. You are just borrowing the land it is built on.

Ok, well you took umbrage to something that was not my idea.

I was solely addressing the OP and his idea that he had some imaginary freedoms violated. No freedoms were violated, Google simply found a way to fight ruthless child predators and he somehow took offense to it

I will no longer reply to you because I see now that you come here to argue, and only to argue. You will look for the most minute thing, such as that I abused you. You will pick an argument out of thin air. The op has more substance than you. You solely seek argument, I'll no longer acknowledge you.

That's a pity. Must be hell meeting somebody who disagrees with you.

Google simply found a way to violate everbody elses rights without any certainty the rights of violated children are now better served / protected. See, your 'ruthless child predators' are almost non-existent - that would be professional CP distributors or insane people. Neither category is likely to use Gmail anyway, or if they do, will use hacked accounts.

See, I know a bit about child abuse too. It are almost always the parents or direct family that are the culprits. They go to VERY great lengths to ensure they aren't caught and the overwhelming majority of them would not be as stupid to use Gmail to document their abuse. Some stats:

Who Are the Perpetrators?

Perpetrators of child abuse or neglect are most often the child’s own parents. According to NCANDS, in 2005, 79.4 percent of perpetrators were parents and 6.8 percent were other relatives. The largest remaining categories of perpetrators were the unmarried partner of a child’s parent (3.8 percent) and other perpetrators (4.1 percent). In 3.6 percent of child maltreatment cases the perpetrators were missing or unknown. In under 1 percent of child maltreatment cases the perpetrator was a foster parent, residential facility staff, the child’s daycare provider, a legal guardian, friends or neighbors, or other professionals (USDHHS, 2007).

Approximately 40 percent of child victims were maltreated by their mothers acting alone; another 18.3 percent were maltreated by their fathers acting alone; 17.3 percent were abused by both parents (USDHHS, 2007).

I totally fail to see how violating on-line privacy rights - whether or not the T&C allows it - helps to 'catch' the main culprits of child abuse. The only way I know to 'catch' child abusers is being vigilant, having school teachers and other professionals like doctors etc. be very aware of the signs of child abuse and having a professional / governmental system that allows professionals to step in before it is too late. Alas, even that already goes awry: in some cases totally decent fathers that were simply taking pictures of their bathing children have been brought before a panel because they were assumed to be "creating child porn".

FYI, I will fight abuse. That includes child-abuse.

You know what guys. Screw your liberties and your freedoms. Can you even FATHOM what it is like to be molested, raped, by strangers, families, friends, completely incapable of defending yourself, helpless. Old men touching on you, inside of you, and on and on.
I'm starting to believe the scum of the earth reside here on ATS. This forum is hitting all time lows

SCREW YOUR LIBERTIES AND YOUR FREEDOMS IF IT MEANS SOME INNOCENT LITTLE BOY OR GIRL HAS TO HAVE THEIR LIFE UTTERLY DESTROYED AND SCARRED FOR EVERY SECOND OF THE REST OF THEIR EXISTENCE ON THIS EARTH.

Do you think you could handle being held down helplessly while the scummiest men of the earth, possibly your father, insert their penis inside of you until he orgasms, and display it for the world to see?

Do you understand this is the price others have to pay for your freedoms and liberties that you value so much?

Oh and just to add a little something, your free Gmail service IS NOT entitled to privacy. So what you are defending, in weight of pedophiles throughout the world, is not even existant.

How do you feel now?

Nice try. I don't let feelings dictate my behavior and influence my decisions.

I'd say there's a subtle uber-agenda driving the invasion of everyone's privacy, and the catching of criminals and protection of children is an excuse to have access to our data. Ideas come from your data; your thoughts have expression in your data. Thieves go through it to rob you of the value in your data. It's espionage. It's theft.
