And yet there is still nothing at all in that that should preclude bringing these two home. That's the question in the OP. Still it's not something to panic about and reporting half stories doesn't change real facts. a reply to: MrCynic

Large droplets suspended in the air. The remainder of that theory by Dr Kobinger stated that it could spread to someone very nearby.
Just quote the parts that support your fears. That's the way to educate people.
A true airborne disease like the flu spreads rapidly . Increasing 100 fold every ten days or so. veke reply to: butcherguy

I will repeat that I am not scared. You don't have to be afraid to keep a common sense guard up.

I have heard that viruses can mutate... any truth to that?

Tell me though, how long does an outbreak of ebola typically last before it 'fizzles out', judging from the past?

And that is for diseases like the flu as stated within the amendment. It has NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS OUTBREAK. a reply to: kosmicjack

from the link:

This subsection does not apply to influenza.

How does a virus transmit from person to person when it is traveling by large droplets suspended in air?
I never said that it was like influenza. It did travel from monkeys to pigs which were in separate cages in a laboratory setting. Chances are that it traveled via droplets in the air.... like a sneeze creates.... when you have a cold.

You seem upset.
But I am glad that you are not worried.
There isn't any reason to worry right now.

Life adapts and breaks boundaries. This is a growing disaster, its getting worst and to date is the largest outbreak on record. I think its a terrible idea to bring these people here. I agree with kosmicjack's idea of a ship.

I don't have much faith in labs and containment facilities built by the lowest bidder.

And that's fine. The facts just don't support a threat of any world wide pandemic which some members are trulyuly fearing. Maybe not you personally but some are. It doesn't help when people quote half a story to boost the fear factor. It doesn't help to link stories of human errors that MIGHT happen especially when the organization being slandered has done an excellent job of containing pathogens for decades. It's just stupid fear mongering to do so.

I know.
People were scared about Y2K, it was going to bring about the end of the world as we know it, remember?

They will be fine after the outbreak fizzles out. Just that they were worried over very little for a while.

There is always a chance that the outbreak could cross the oceans and continue to get worse, but I think the one that gets us will offer little warning. People will start getting sick and start dropping like flies before we even realize that there is a problem. Chances are that it will be a respiratory virus.

time to cull the poor!

CDC and other health agencies knew it was spreading quick, but sent minimal resources deliberately.

this could wipe out a large portion of Africa and some impoverished African ghetto's abroad!

They're playing a risky game

Exactly. When people expressed a fear of H1N1 they had a good reason. An airborne disease that affected young and old alike and not merely the very old and very young as most influenza do. Something that spreads like fire in a hayloft. a reply to: butcherguy

There is no panic here. I am not losing sleep over this. I'm not making preparations, yet. God willing, I will never have to go beyond the mental stages of prep to weather out a major viral outbreak with a very high mortality rate.

This is reasonable caution and sensible learning toward an emerging crisis and threat.

If average people were ringing the bells of alarm, it would be like a dozen other examples of what I see some people call doom porn. This is not average people ringing the bell though. These are the very people the world has placed in charge of these things to trust in ringing the bells of alarm only when there is alarm to notify us of.

They are now ringing those bells while some demand we not listen to the distant noise and pretend it is simply music playing too loud or some such thing. No, alarm bells are ringing and they are from the United Nations, World Health Organization and others who form THE world authority on communicable disease.

The bells are not loud yet, but they are being rung and we ignore it at our peril.

From the "CDC Interim Guidance about Ebola Virus Infection for Airline Flight Crews, Cargo and Cleaning Personnel, and Personnel Interacting with Arriving Passengers":

Transmission to humans may occur through direct contact with blood or body fluids (e.g., saliva, and urine) of an infected person or animal or through contact with objects that have been contaminated with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person.

Provide the sick passenger with a surgical mask (if the passenger can tolerate wearing one) to reduce the number of droplets expelled into the air by talking, sneezing, or coughing.

www.cnn.com...

www.cdc.gov...

During a good sneeze, up to 40,000 droplets of saliva may be expelled from the throat and some of them fly out of the mouth at speeds of up to over 60,000 kilometers per hour.

Read "The Hot Zone" and you may feel differently about that. When the Reston strain broke out and 2 people tested positive for it,they put them in a standard hospital with just standard warnings on them. USAMRID was furious. They felt the CDC had jeopardized all the D.C. area doing this, and would have come in with containment pods and pulled the people properly. The CDC's answer? The head of the CDC at the time said that he had been in Africa during an outbreak of Ebola and had been in a hut that was 'hot',he had stabbed himself with a needle when an old woman he was treating had a seizure. He didn't come down with it,so therefore it was not that contagious as far as he was concerned.

Never mind that the woman may not have had Ebola at all, that it may have just been hysteria that set off her seizure. That had nothing to do with it. He was willing to risk peoples lives because he thought it wasn't that important. Oh and yeah, the CDC is the one with the misplaced specimens that were just found in a closet, and there was an incident years ago where they had misplaced small pox as well. Yeah, I don't think I want to depend on them. I'm sure there are some that work there and take their job very seriously, but its the fools that don't that worry me.

Luckily the Reston strain did nothing to humans. But things could have been so much different. Why would you take the chance? At that time, NO one knew what Reston would do to a human.

H1N1 does not carry a known and proven death rate which approaches 90%.

The flu is a cake walk compared to Ebola. Even 'The Spanish Lady' only had a documented mortality rate of 2.5% or roughly 50 deaths per 1,000 people with full infection.

Ebola can and does kill 9 out of 10. The comparisons simply don't apply.
