Erich von Daniken was an amateur who interpreted archaeological evidence in his own way, unhindered by the facts.
It would be wrong to call him a fraud, especially at the beginning of his career. I think he genuinely believed what he wrote. But it was a lot of
nonsense — plausible nonsense. Poor fellow, he didn't know any better.
To have been the originator of a school of thought is quite an achievement, but in the end, we must put von Daniken down on the debit side of the
ledger of human civilization and move on.
