Good idea for a thread, but BAD execution.

Greetings fellow members!

It came to my attention in the last few minutes, that a thread had been posted which revolved around the depraved data sharing habits of NSA types, with regard to image data they had gleaned from the various systems which absorb the information and activity, of users of the web.

Essentially the thread seemed to suggest that private pictures taken by web users, were being shared around by NSA offices and employees. Now, a thread which informs people of such a thing is fair and fine enough by all accounts, as is any thread which enlightens members as to the sins of those tasked with monitoring the internet for the purposes of "security". However, the Terms and Conditions make clear, that this is a site used by all ages, and certain types of image data are not acceptable to be placed in a thread, nor are links to those types of image data.

With that in mind, it would be wise if people referred to the terms and conditions of the site, if posting anything which could be considered to be age restricted material. Furthermore, a thread such as the one which has now been removed, does not need to include pictographic data to back it up, nor links to the same, since the facts in textual form, are more than enough to illuminate the situation. I think we all know what a bunch of pathetic, sweaty, mindless goons sharing nude pictures around an office look like. There is little need to qualify the mental image, with an ACTUAL image.

Those who are of an age to know what one is talking about will, and those who are not, hopefully, will not.

Think about it next time?

Well, it was not my intention to come across that way.

I had an opinion on a situation related to this forum, and therefore I posted it. If this is one of those opinions which would have been better off left under a rock, rather than posted on the boards, I am very sorry, and promise to do better next time!

No need for the unnecessary disclaimer...and anyways, the only way you can do better is to set up an Avatar gif where you are double-fisting it.

Enjoy your posts Brit.

As a human being, I find I sometimes need to be reminded that I have better to give than what I am presenting. I, for one, appreciate the reminder.
Is there a less offensive way to express ones' self? Is there a kinder way to disagree with someone? Is it okay if someone elses view of the world is so different than mine that I can't even begin to comprehend it?

Do I want to try and live my life from a center of love and harmony, filling my environment with peace? Or, do I want to divide those around me, and live my life in a state of chaos?
These are the choices I try to consider every day. Sometimes I need to be reminded of what is truly important, so thank you True Brit!

TrueBrit,

You are correct that such material or links is against T&C - I would hate for my kid to come up to me and see something on my screen I had no intention of allowing in my house. The only way I do ATS during the day is knowing that the site is not going to have things like that.

Don't get me wrong - he's not reading threads or anything, but he does live here and my computer is out in the open.
I am glad the Mods jumped on it and had the content removed, but still, it would be good for members to think about it first, before posting extreme content. I know some people have posted links with clear warnings that the material linked to was explicit (mostly on the gruesome 911 or war side). I would love clarification on that point from the T&C - is that ok or not? I don't object if I'm warned, personally, but if I'm not warned and I come across it unexpectedly, it makes me very angry.

Thanks, TrueBrit.

I think where certain topics are concerned, there is a certain amount of leeway given to posters on content which could be considered gruesome. For example, I recall that there were some cattle mutilation videos and images which did the rounds for a while, which could have been considered merely gory. However, unlike images of an "erotic" nature, those images have a diagnostic use, because members with the knowledge, and indeed the intestinal fortitude, could examine them in order to make determinations about the cause of the injuries in evidence.

Most of the threads which have carried such content, have featured warnings, either as a big disclaimer at the top of the original post, or placed above the content, so that one almost has to read it before scrolling down to the content in question. Furthermore, I believe it is very much frowned upon to post a thread whose main focus is gore for its own sake, or to make a point by way of over the top gore, or total relliance on it.

Wait, let me get this straight..... Someone posted a topic criticizing the NSA for being the pervert scumbags they are, and sharing personal porn they stole, then turned around and did the same thing? By posting pictures of the personal stolen porn?

Generally if there is a link, and a warning that it's graphic, it's allowed, WRT to topics such as Syria, and other war zones, etc. They are NOT allowed to post the pictures or videos in thread, even with warnings.

Thanks Zaphod! I appreciate the feedback. I also think it is fair - it gives me the choice to look or not, while not restricting information important to a topic.

@TrueBrit
Thanks TB - I appreciate your response as well!

Well, that's near enough what happened. I am not even sure that the image that was in the thread was actual image data shared by NSA employees. It took the form of an advert, sort of a "girls of NSA", "stolen from actual web users" kind of thing, with pictures of ladies, sans the clothes, with the tiniest censor tags on Gods earth on the "naughty" bits.

The whole thing was a little shoddy really!

hey there's nothing about this thread suggesting truebrit is trying to be a wannabe mod. a thread got deleted because someone made a bonehead decision and that thread also contained information that should be shared with ats members so truebrit was just suggesting how to prevent what could have been a good thread from being rremoved in the future. knowing the tnc is always a good idea so you don't have this happen.

I actually didn't see the thread but this is what I got from the op. if something like this is going on I would like to know. I already figured it was happening but confirmation is always better than suspecting.

It's not about empowerment, it's about not depending on moderators to keep the community nice, friendly and respectful. We can all put our grain of sand.

I don't need a cop around to behave.
is it so hard to behave on the internet?
This shouldn't be a place for your dark side to take over your conscience.
