Interestingly Russia denied shooting down KAL007 right up until the uS ambassador played the intercept of the Kremlin order to shoot it down in the UN.

This is going to send some into speculation overload ... I'm following the breaking news to avoid that

DONETSK, June 29, /ITAR-TASS/. Self-defence forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic have taken control over a missile defence army unit equipped with Buk missile defence systems, the press service of the Donetsk People’s Republic told Itar-Tass on Sunday.
So far, no details are available about the number and condition of the missile systems taken over by the self-defence forces. The press service refused to comment.The Buk missile defence system is a mobile medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed to defend field troops and logistics installations against air threats in conditions of heavy electronic countermeasures and intense enemy fire.

Donetsk militia takes control of Ukrainian anti-air installation

The self-defense forces of Donetsk People’s Republic seized control of a Ukrainian anti-air military installation, RIA Novosti reports.

"The forces of Donetsk People’s Republic assumed control of A-1402 military base," the militia's representative said. According to him, it is an anti-aircraft missile forces facility equipped with Buk mobile surface-to-air missile systems.

Actually US intelligence was so far able to confirm that it was a SAM, but it is still unable to confirm whether it was launched from Ukrainian or Russian soil.

(Ukrainians were accusing already a few times of being under fire from the other side of the border, so it is technically possible)

Russian/Rebel shoot-down they are one in the same.

Many of the so called leaders of the rebels are known to be members of the old KBG, Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, or the Glavnoye razvedyvatel'noye upravleniye GRU military wing.

As far as is been given, the black box/s are found and waiting to be handed over. As far as a missile strike is concerned, the evidence of that is more likely to be physical and the remnants found, and it is more likely than not that it was a missile strike. An immediate distruption of the black box along with the physical evidence would be more confirmation.
I have seen the pictures of the many bodies on the ground, and it is pretty clear that many of them were not in the plane when they fell, and at least one eyewitness spoke about the sky full of falling people, and you can also see tiny debris floating to the ground.
The rest is pretty much anybody's guess, you have a three-way choice to pick on as to whose missile it was. Russian, Ukrainian or Gung Ho rebel Russian fighters, you could even throw a mystery group if you wanted too..but someone did the firing, and they are a bunch of feck-ups. R.I.P. to all those souls.

An update now includes that there were 9 britons people aboard, with 41 unknownsto be still verified.

This is likely going to turn out to be the Russian backed rebels or the Russians themselve. Which ever one that has been shooting planes down it the area the last couple of weeks. They likely thought they had another easy target in a Ukraine cargo plane. As the rebels have not been operationing any aircraft they likely shoot at anything just the opposite of Ukraine who would assume anything in the air is friendly. Sad for the people aboard.
