U.S. Psychological Operations: Military Uses Networks to Spread Misinformation:

The U.S. military is reportedly distributing misinformation to the media as part of a campaign of psychological operation.

Good ol' propaganda, it seems that both sides have their own 'truth' of happenings in Iraq. Makes you wonder where to find the real news from the frontline as it is.

Nothing too suprising, but a good post - especially for people who don't believe such stories.

One of those misinformations is that two weeks ago, the Fallujah battle was already won, while fighting is still going on at this very time. Another misinformation is about the casualtity numbers. According to Pentagon, only 5000 troops have been heavily wounded so far, while the Landstuhl hospital alone has already treated over 21.000.

I wonder how many complaining about the misinformation would never have been born if we didn't lie to the press about D-day.

Disinformation in warfare is as old as warfare, and there is no news in this story. It is not surprising that the U.S. military uses it, just like its enemies do.

What would be scandalous would be the ignorance of these techniques on the part of those responsible for using them. There are entire commands devoted to precisely this sort of warfare, and it goes by many names.

The real story, in my opinion, is how these techniques are used by non-military organizations, including civilian governments, political activists, big business, religious groups, news services, etc. etc. etc.

In fact, good luck finding anyone in the public eye who doesn't use these techniques. Some are more honest about it than others. More than a few ATS members use these exact same techniques themselves -- more often than not while simultaneously denouncing the use of the same techniques by others.

Once you have done that, it is doubtful that anything will ever surprise you again.

Apparently there is an internal struggle in the Army. The Public Affairs division is not keen with the idea of being used as a tool by psyops.

Several top officials told the LA Times that they see a danger of blurring what are supposed to be well-defined lines between the stated mission of military public affairs and psychological and information operations. One senior defense official told the paper "The movement of information has gone from the public affairs world to the psychological operations world. What's at stake is the credibility of people in uniform."
