USGS: 6.1-magnitude quake shakes northern Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.1 earthquake has struck off Chile's northern coast. There were no immediate reports of damage and authorities discounted the possibility of a tsunami.

The USGS said the quake's epicenter was located 14 miles (22 kilometers) west of Iquique, Chile, and had a depth of 22 miles (35.7 kilometers). The quake hit at 4:54 p.m. (20:54 GMT) on Sunday.

Chile is one of the world's most seismic countries and is prone to tsunamis, because of the way the Nazca tectonic plate plunges beneath the South American plate, pushing the towering Andes cordillera ever higher.

An 8.2-mag quake struck the same area in April, killing 6.

How far apart are Japa and Chile in terms of longitude? That seems to be almost 180 degrees. I'm thinking these clusters of earthquakes might have something to do with spherical harmonics (every 120 degrees, 180 degrees).

Oh I don't know how far apart they are. Me he you mean latitude?
There's a theory one can occur in one spot and the exact opposit place on earth gets one. Starts with 'a' forgot the word used. They aren't opposite though.

Japan is the western pacific whereas chile is midway at the equator.

I think 180 degrees is halfway around?
That location may be Malaysia or New Zealand not sure though.
