(CNN) -- A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Monday morning off Mexico's southern coast near the border with Guatemala, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake happened at 6:23 a.m. local (7:23 a.m. ET), centered in the Pacific Ocean but not far from the coast, about 22 miles west-southwest of Tapachula, Mexico, and about 140 miles west of Guatemala City, Guatemala.
The depth of the quake was 47.2 miles, the USGS said.
