The Irish have long memories and in some instances very bitter ones. For hundreds of years Northern Ireland has been in turmoil. Still a part of the United Kingdom (Britain), Northern Ireland is a place of contrasts and war. The two major protagonists (Sinn Fein and DUP) have been 'to the table' repeatedly as Britain and others have attempted to broker peace in the region.

LONDON (Reuters) - The leader of Sinn Fein, the political ally of the IRA guerrillas, says agreement to seal a peace settlement in Northern Ireland was possible but could not be based on "humiliation".

The comments by Gerry Adams came amid frantic Anglo-Irish efforts to disarm the IRA and get rival Catholic and Protestant parties to agree to share power in the province.

"A deal is still possible, but an accommodation, a partnership of equals cannot be built through a process of humiliation," Adams, leader of the largest Catholic party Sinn Fein, said after talks with Prime Minister Tony Blair.

As world focus seems to follow where America points other parts of the planet still have problems unsolved. Sinn Fein, the Irish political organization linked to the IRA (Irish Republican Army) many times denounced as a terrorist organization, strives to come to a workable power sharing arrangement with the equally destructive Protestant Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

Hopes are low that the two sworn enemies could ever work together. Both easily fit the American definition of terrorist organizations. Turmoil in Northern Ireland goes back hundreds of years with blood-feud finality.
