For what 100+ years the sport of Americans was FOOTBALL.

You know Ma,appie pie, and Washington team that just lost it's name.

Now it's 'soccer'.

Moral decay ?

Yeah.

This nation has become a nation of pansies.

Place your bets between a Football player, and a soccer player ?

$50k on the football player to win in the game of 'fisticuffs'.

I thought the article was satire, but it seems like the person was serious....
As a German, who was raised near Dortmund (big football club, for anyone not knowing), it is just a part of me and there are legends and heroes.
If somebody scores the deciding goal at the 90 minute mark, he will get praise for it. If a keeper holds a penalty, he will be the hero for one day.
People are just getting offended by football nowadays? Really?

I am starting to things the article is not satire, but inflammatory to generate traffic to the site (Clarion Ledger) . You get riled up either way and march over to post or read what others have posted if you cant be bothered to sign up.

Watched the USA play this evening and their football has come on leaps and bounds. Okay, there isn't the individual skill you will find in European or South American teams, but together they work as an effective team who held their own against Germany tonight. All the sports pundits were saying this — seriously praising the States for its ability in the wonderful game. The fan support for the States in the stadium was just as good as anything coming from the more well know teams.

American Football. A game for pansies

American Football is the English game of Rugby, with a few rule changes.
Rugby players do not wear the cissy protective clothing as in American Football.

That Coulter personality has to be euthanized away from its misery.
But it looks like she speaks for a huge chunk of voters in USA. They will find another one.
So...something has to be done with that 'chunk'. Like educate them better, I mean, it's 21 century, time for pips to advance mentally, no? Pipe dream...oh, well.

Actually, Ann coulter and her Washington/insider/lobbyist friends are the ones providing all the"moral decay"to this country.
To those outside the States this women makes outrageous statements like this for a living. Also having watched her career the last 10 years or so I think she's close to certifiable.
Person, I've watched a few games of the cup and enjoyed them. But then, I'm part of the"moral decay".

In which case Obama's plan to distract the public will have succeeded.

apparently also not satire - a Fox news pundit has suggested the whole world cup is just a ploy.....

"I'm suspect," Dr. Keith Ablow said Thursday on "Outnumbered" as the US men's national team faced off against Germany. "I am suspect because, here's the thing. Why, at a time when there are so many national and international issues of such prominence -- I'm a little suspicious of yet another bread-and-circus routine. Let's roll out the marijuana, pull back the laws, and get people even more crazy about yet another entertainment event."

It was too weird for the other co-hosts....

Ablow's four female co-hosts weren't buying it, interrupting him with protests of "what?" and "what's wrong with you?"
"This is a way to distract people," Ablow continued. "This is like Rome. I can see why Obama would love the World Cup --"

"What are you talking about?" interjected Kimberly Guilfoyle, who said her son plays soccer. "This is encouraging for kids to get out and play sports, and you can play soccer from a young age."

And whatever you think about football, it does more to bring people/nations together than any other sport in the world. Quite an achievement really.

This crap again? Yeah, yeah, it's an old game and North America has changed it. It's now 2 different games. One played by collegiate types that don't need any protection and those that play so damn fast, at weights of over 300lbs and do it to survive the 3.5 years that is the average span of an NFL players career. Please. Get over it.

What has "who would win in a fight" got to with the price of fish? That has to be the most idiotic way to compare sports.

At least, in "Soccer" the 90 minute game lasts 90 minutes - plus a few minutes usually for added time. In American Football, a 60 minute game lasts for 4 hours, with the whole thing designed around advertising and commercialism, rather than just playing the game - don't even get me started on the "half time show", as if without it, the spectators would be so bored they would go home. Not to mention the totally ridiculous notion of having your entire team swapped around if you go on the offence/defence, plus all the time-outs and breaks the poor fat bastards need to have.

Anyhoo - the US has had massive support in Brazil. They are apparently 2nd in the amount of fans that have made it over there. Like it or not, but "soccer" is getting bigger in the US and it is the only global team sport the US can actually compete with the best in the world, so surely it is "patriotic" to get behind your boys?

And I really don't understand why Yanks have an issue with low scoring games - not that many games end 0-0 anyway - it's not just about goals, its the play, the tactics, the attempts on goal, the saves, the near misses, the tension, unlike in Basketball, for example, where it is essentially the last team to score wins in some daft 92-90 scoreline.

NFL is Rugby with padding, helmets, huge squads of players and breaks.

Basketball is just Netball with Giants.

Baseball is just rounders, just more boring.

It's no wonder the rest of the world doesn't pay much attention to them.
