How many even know it's a racial slur?

No excuse.
Only the Romani minority community may use the term without fear of repercussion, if the recent past has taught us anything.

So a person is guilty even if they didn't know they were committing a crime?

In our PC society? Yes.

I opened this thread expecting the worst, and now feel gypped.

Ummm. . . . (I'm telling on you!)

I think we just aren't sensitive enough. (eye-rolling emoticon here)

That is not exactly what I was getting at. Just that it doesn't seem like there was any ill will intended by Mrs. Obama.

What one calls political correctness, another calls not being a mean-spirited ass.

And yet, in the name of political correctness, many people without ill intent or knowledge have been chided, derided, and punished. As she and her ilk support such nonsense, she and her ilk should be held to the same standard.

I know a Navy Chief who was punished for using the term "flip chart" when giving a lecture and in reference to the chart comprised of sheets of paper that you write on and then "flip" over to a new sheet when you wanted to write some more. He was being racially insensitive according to the complainant because "flip" is a derogatory term for Philipino. This sort of nonsense will not end until the major proponents of it feel the results of these stupid PC polices.

So only if the term is used in a mean-spirited fashion, it should be considered politically incorrect?

Personally, I think we should all get over it.

The First Lady does it.
Normal, regular people do it.

And 99% of the time, no-one has any mean spirited intentions by it.

This is a sarcasm piece. Done to illustrate how crazy the PC world has gotten.

And yet some still see it as an opportunity to trash a person that has done what 95% of us have, with the same ignorance of the word.

Did I know the meaning? Yes. I'm quite well read though.

I think it's another non-issue. TONS of those lately. My 2 points:

1) Who hasn't used that word?
2) How many even know it's a racial slur?

Ya i have been using that word for 10+ years and had no idea it was a reference to a gypsy.
Have to agree this is a non issue.

I couldn't tell you if I ever even met a Gypsy.

If you have ever been in a bank in Europe, you probably passed one when you walked up to it.

One scam that I remember was the lady dressed in shabby clothes, wearing a shawl holding a baby wrapped in a blanket, begging for money. I was assured by locals that there was no baby inside the blanket.

Ooops! That post wasn't very PC of me.

Alert the Thought Police!!!

Where have I trashed anyone?

You see, that's the double-standard that comes with political correctness. It's an arbitrary weapon used at the discretion of the wielder.

Where the term gypped might have its origens on being swindled by gypsies, it has never been used as a racial slur. Unlike say redskin which nobody whit a brain woud start tossing around a reservation.

Jipped is a slur? I thought it was invented slang, the spelling isn't even standardized o.O

Ah bleep the world, language changes. Not losing any sleep over this one for damn sure.

As a Canadian Beez I am just a little offended by your last mayonnaise remark, I find it very distasteful. By the way I prefer Miracle Whip to mayonnaise much better on a BLT.

Do you think she would have used the term had she known its history?

Do you think her statement is equal to some of the slurs that have been in the news lately (the N-word and Redskins)?

I just had a thought. There must be people out there paid to hang on every word of political opponents to grasp any straw to slam them. You couldn't pay me enough to do that.

Remember "macaca?"
