Sunni militants take control of Iraq-Syria border point

AFP – Sunni militants led by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant took control of an Iraq-Syria border crossing after Syrian rebels withdrew overnight, security officers and witnesses said.

The sources said insurgents took control of the Al-Qaim border crossing, one of three official border points between Iraq and Syria, after gunmen linked to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Nusra Front left.

More control for ISIS, which is good for DC if they want to get NATO and friends involved. Interesting that the FSA and Al Nursa didn't put up much of a fight. They fled just like the Iraq military fled.

some smarter people than I on here have surmised that this "cross border" thing is going to be used, is being used to lend causation sympathy to a back door way of bombing targets in Syria (read that Assad targets in Syria). I have been away and wanted to know what you or anyone thinks about that idea.

I know our government is still somewhere up there in the clouds chanting "Assad must go". Wouldn't a nice little insurgency from Syria into Iraq provide just the excuse to make it so?

This is just what DC wants. For now they'll stay out, officially, but their plans for ME will be going forward soon enough.

Military intervention is just a day away. They've allowed these terrorists to murder Iraqis in thousands upon thousands for years now and with all the recent advancements of ISIS and friends it's only a matter of time before the west and friends move in to continue their campaign of military fail.

They don't give a poop about lives or freedom, they want whatever it is that they want.

you dont have to be Smart to see this scenario unfolding , soon the public wants intervention , would the international powers of politics really allow this organisation to grab such amount of territory just because they dont know what to do about the problem.

A lot of the Fighters in Syria have double passports from many Western countries , if this problem doesn't get solved these people will become terrorist cells in western countries.

Nobody in the UN security counsel will vote against intervention towards this organisation , time is on the side of isis because if they grow bigger nobody will be able to ignore the problem.

I don't think Bagdad will be a part of the ISIS campaine Whitneys piece looks at it from the long term plan of a Iraq being divided up along sectarian lines .Washington wants to install someone who will play this out ,which Malaki is not agreeing to . Syria is a big question mark in the long haul but seems to be set aside until they can finalize this last move .

I think because the FSA doesnt really think in terms of borders , Iraq has proven an easy grab for Isis / other terrorists organisations.

With fallujah they have a staging area away from their main front in Syria or to launch other campaigns , or set up a military infrastructure , or use as recruitment locations.

Everyone keeps saying that but I don't see any outcome that could prevent that from happening no matter what.

That is the litmus test. Why dispatch a carrier task force and cruise missile laden escorts to the Persian gulf if there is nothing to worry about? In my mind the west is the problem and the current blowback heading south will land somewhere. Defense analysts' seem to have trouble identifying ISIS targets from civilians in Iraq. This will be coming to a head. And we will be kept in the dark.

Can't escape this itching feeling though at the base of my neck. The fiasco to come in Iraq may be a great big repeat of Benghazi.

Currently, elements of ISIS have been spotted less than 50 km from Baghdad?

Well we all know whats next!

Syria, whose president is sitting back amused at last year’s failed campaign by the US to remove him from power, and whose army is at a stalemate with the local US-armed and funded rebels
Qatar, which is supporting the Syrian rebels, but so far has not made its stance clear on Iraq. Like Saudi, it too may be indirectly backing ISIS
Jordan, which is a close friend the US, and which may have hosted ISIS in a secret base on its territory with the US instructing the jihadist group according to an unconfirmed report
Turkey, which is on constant alert to Kurdish escalation across the border, the same Kurds which now have far more leverage courtesy of ISIS crushing the Iraq army in the north and handing over Kurds access to oil fields in the north.
And of course Russia: because while Putin clearly benefits from rising crude prices, it is his Lukoil that is developing (and investing vast amounts of money in) the vast Iraqi West Qurna-2 oil field. It is not clear how he would feel about it falling into ISIS hands.
