A Texas man is standing defiant after he claims he was told by his apartment complex that he had to remove an American flag from his balcony because it was a “threat towards the Muslim community.”

Duy Tran told KHOU that he has friends who died for the country, so he decided to hang one from his balcony after moving into a new apartment in Webster, Texas. However, he said that soon after he hung the flag, he was told by his apartment complex manager he had to remove it.

I remember when there was never a controversy for flying the American Flag in America.

Some Spanish communities in the past might have complained ( LaRaza -1 sp) and now some Muslim population or community might be offended..

What have we become other than a bunch of afraid currently politically correct sheep.. I guess I am not touchy feely enough.. To many friends messed up for all their lives thinking they were defending the idea of that flag..

Stop being so hysterical.. If the manager did say what is claimed, He/she is clearly an idiot. As far as I am aware, the flag still flies proudly on buildings right across the United States - no need for panic

But this is how it begins. It's happened in other countries. The UK is particularly sensitive to it's foreign residents. The only reason not to fly an American flag in America is if it's tattered, frayed or dirty. If you see one like that, you can insist it be taken down.

I ASSURE YOU there is not an hysterical bone in my body nor am I aware of any panic setting in...

Yep sure does; just not on this building or several others that have made topics on ATS and other news services. I am more on the "he/she is an idiot" side of things.

The thing I can't quite understand is how anyone would get so bent out of shape over something that amounts to nothing more than a colorful bed sheet.

I mean bent out of shape either way, both the person who felt the need to display his "beliefs", or the one whose "beliefs" were supposedly threatened by the display.

Beliefs?, believe what you want to believe, live and let live....

Shut the *&&%$@# up, both of em!!!....

The only reason that it could be construed as a threat to them is if they're part of a Muslim terrorist cell, as least as far as I can figure.

In any case, the American flag is a symbol of this country. If they don't like it, then they can get off American soil.

What does it say about displaying flags in his rental agreement? Many of these communities have rules against displaying flags and I'm willing to bet this one is no different. The tv station mentioned that other residents displayed patriotic symbols and nobody complained but none of them were flags. This guy more than likely didn't read his agreement and thinks by adding "the Muslims might get offended" will get the complex to let him do what he wants even if it's against the rules.

People who have never been in the service and fought for an idea and watched their friends and brother's in arms die or get mangled feel like your post implies. Nothing wrong with that; just a totally different mind set.. The dead service men's caskets are draped in the American flag and upon burial the flag is given to the surviving spouse or relatives. To some the flag means a lot more than just a colored piece of cloth.. To many people have died defending that flag right or wrong; some respect the ideas it has stood for .. again right or wrong..

The colored piece of cloth stuff started back in the 60's with the flag burning in protest of the Viet Nam War by some of the college anti-war protestors. Were they wrong to burn the flag as a form of protest ? Only each individual can decide for themselves as they will have to decide if Tran is right in not taking down the flag.

My point of this thread was, I can remember when the American flag was flown proudly without offending the easily offended..

If someone is offended by the American flag while living in America as far as I am concerned they should go back to their home country.. Oops can't do that they ran from being executed, or starved, or no work, or, or, or, "hey mom, look at all the freebies"!...

As far as I am concerned screw them and the horse they rode in on... But like I said, "some things I am not very touchy feely about".

This is how Muslim hate continues, telling people they can't do something on behalf of someone else will cause resentment. Muslims know they are in America and don't care if an American flag is displayed anywhere. My neighbor has huge confederate flag on his bedroom window, I don't care for it because I am from Africa.

Did some Muslims complain?

It doesnt appear so. If you watch the vid I just posted above, this is the statement made by the apartment complex in writing to the news crew, after they politely refused to be interviewed and asked on officer to escort them from the property.

"While the Lodge on El Dorado admires our resident's patriotism, we must enforce our property rules and guidelines. Such guidelines maintain the aesthetics of our apartment community and provide for the safety of all residents. The apartment community already proudly displays our country's flag in a safe and appropriate manner at the entrances to our community."

They were able to record other patriotic displays on other balconies as well.

The broadcast also stated:

We have not heard of any residents complaining about any flags at the complex, or any of the patriotic items we saw. In fact, we spoke to several neighbors who say they want Tran's flag to stay.

It seems to be either an isolated resident making the complaints, or the apartment complex is doing this all on their own.

The Texas man should have asked the apartment manager if he would like a BLT sandwich and maybe a few for the muslim's that the flag had threatened.

From the apartment management's statement, it sounds like their rules are for NO individual flags - not just American flags. That is probably pretty wise, because it's possible you would have all kinds of flags being put out that weren't American. That might make the "Muricans" get pretty gripey, dontcha think? The management said they have the American flag out, so they don't seem to be too worried about the Muslims.

"I’m gonna leave my flag there, as an American, until she shows me proof that I don’t have the right to leave my flag there," he said.

There you go, make them at least play a card before folding. This just might be the manager's own opinion of things.

This is where we're at now, folks.......Rental agreements now have dumb stuff like "no flags" and whatnot, in case somebody gets offended.

Yes, I can see that this is in the rental agreement, but honestly, it's more about everybody getting their metaphorical panties in a wad over simple things like flags, and how apartment buildings and homeowner's associations have so many rules so that said panties stay unwadded for everybody.

We're all a bunch of stupid children who lack the ability to respect how others feel, apparently, and who need to be told what we can and cannot do, down to the last small detail.

I'm going outside and displaying a Texas flag now, I wish to offend the New Mexicans who live two miles away.

Just an example of how many Muslim's have infiltrated our infrastructure that are not here to assimilate into any part of American culture but to change it as much as possible.

Offended by the flag of a country you are in...that's rich, how insane is that !!

It's just about as insane as people going off against the Muslims when there has been no evidence of any Muslims saying anything.

Shouldn't the Muslims be learning to respect America and our flags if they are living here? I thought that that was part of the immigration procedure. Muslim is a religion, we all have freedom of religion yet we are all supposed to respect our country which gives us this right.
