America as a theocracy

Evening [here] all, I'm taking a short break from throwing tarot and communicating with the unknown to talk about a topic that I kind of hold dear to the back of my skull.
I should start from the beginning: Escape From LA. Why am i mentioning this slightly subpar sequel to John Carpenter's earlier work set in New York. [spoiler] one of the skgnificant plots of the movie deal with America having turned into a theocracy, after a fundie Christian preacher 'predicted' the eartnhquake that severed los angeles from the mainland because of it's sinfulness. He becomes president, suspends the constitution and bill of rights, and introduces bible based rules that everyone had to follow lest they be banished to a very..um worse off LA.[/spoiler?]

now i, like all of you, know that that's movie unrealism, but who says that it can't actually happen?

I love lurking ATS but i've been seeing threads such as this, this, and this...and it's making me feel a bit uneasy about where the cojntry is headed. So what will happen ;if America goes theocratic?
Would it be akin to the 1979 Iranian revolution, but for Christianity? Mandatory prayer in public and privet, everyone forced to go to a Christian church every sunday? Will we have a dress code, like women wear only dresses, and men dress pants and shirt? maybe a 3 piece suit? What will happen to the African-Americans, Hispanics and other minorities [assuming these Christian overlords want a homogenous White population]? I guess we could say goodbye to women in the workforce, as now they are just for making babies and food for husband.

So many questions, so many possible outcomes...could America benefit as a Christian theocracy, or will it give us worse problems on the global scale?

Many so called "churches", and many of them DO in fact have the term "Christian" in their name are outright hate-groups, not much different from the WBC or the KKK even.

Comes a hypothetical theocrazy (Ok, this typo is funny but it fits perfectly!! : ) all hell would break lose. Minorities, Mexicans, gays, blacks etc. would be hunted down and killed by raging "Christians". Murder and death everywhere. Intolerance would dominate, people who think differently, liberals, progressives etc. would have a hard time and possibly be killed/lynched.

Yes, I realize THEO-CRACY ...the word theo comes from the Greek for "God", but it would mean the exact opposite thing. It would be hell.

I think the whole concept is outdated. Firstly, the idea of our nation being beholden to one idea is not congruent with the ideas I see among the people - be it monarchy, theocracy, democratic republic, etc.

I believe this new Information Age we live in is spawning a new reflection of how we should live and conduct ourselves as humans. The ideas and paradigms of the "old way of thinking" is slowly becoming outdated. Internationally, people are complaining about the exact same things - low pay, too much taxes, ineffective governments/rulers, etc. This is a result of governments and politics acting on very "19th century" paradigms of territory and wealth being the impetus behind success. It's quite obvious that most people aren't looking to acquire these things. They are looking to acquire peace of mind, security, health, and prosperity. The world has become too small to provide those things based on the current methods of business.

While faith and religion will always be an important part of societies, I believe it's slowly becoming evident that religious rule is not the solution. I know, everyone will argue the whole ISIS, and Al Qaeda movement as proof that others believe differently, but they are quite literally, a day late and a dollar short to the main event. It's just unfortunate the rest of the world has to suffer as they undergo their own maturation - something the West did in the Dark Ages through Renaissance eras.

It's time to thing big. I certainly don't have the answers, but I know it lies in collaboration, cooperation and general empathy for others. I'm not espousing some new idealistic movement, but as a whole, we need to grow up and realize our potential - not the potential of relying on some grand leader's vision - theocratic or otherwise.

It's definitely something I see as a possibility, particularly with the recent surge in the American far right (online, at least). I fully believe there are enough morons in the US today to elect one of these shrieking evangelicals, and doing so would be the instant, absolute downfall of the United States. Primarily because the current crop of ultraconservative Christian politicians (and people in general) are apparently unable to tell the difference between the Old Testament (you know, the one with all the stonings, vengeful deities and condemnation of gays) and the New Testament.

Liberals vs. Conservatives....Capitalism vs. Socialism...Progressive vs. Conservative....Unicorns vs. Chains

This is all such OLD thinking.

Anyone who continues to believe these are the foundations of America needs only to talk to anyone on the street. There is not a single unifying voice of reason in our country - other than the latest viral post, and whatever the media channel du jour is spouting!

Give me a break. I'm not even religious and I can see the BS in this statement. Either you have no idea what you're talking about or you hope no one else does. The typical American church isn't exactly the kind of place that thrives on logic and rationality but most of them are quite different from WBC or the KKK. That's just an outright lie.

You know it's interesting that I see this here yet again. One of things usually attached to this idea is the idea of regulated and outlawed sex, but do you know where the state is really trying to regulate sex? There is currently a bill in the California state assembly that would attempt to regulate all consensual sex in an attempt to reduce rape. It would attempt to get couples to have paperwork signed before any sexual encounter documenting consent with consent sought all throughout the encounter to be sure it is actually consensual.

But no, this is a democrat proposal. It's all for the greater good to ensure that your sex is safe and consensual and to make sure no one is getting raped of course. The bill basically says it's your responsibility to make sure you have consent and that you have to be able to prove you always had consent. How do you do that short of providing written documentation? These things will boil down to he said/she said otherwise. But it's a good thing the government is getting involved in our bedrooms. It'll make things ever so much better.

Exactly. People worry about Republicans oppressing people sexually on the basis of Christian morals and it's not as if they haven't tried. It's a reasonable fear. HOWEVER, the people who will inevitably succeed at this kind of oppression will be the left. They'll base their arguments on things like feminism and STDs. They'll even go as far as to bring psychology into the picture and call people "sex addicts" (a made up term if there ever was one). When the government eventually comes into your bedroom, it'll be for your own good. You can count on it.

Well, i'm sort of going off of tje Iran Revolution... but i caan see minivans driving around, like the modesty guards, harassing people because they are not properly dressed.

Yes, there is definitive changes between Islam and Christianity, but they started at the same point with Abraham. Hence why I like to believe fundie Christians are the pots meeting the kettle when they rail on fundie islam.

@ redhorse, i can also see a Handmaiden's Tale type future, but i'm sort of fixed on a 1979 Iran angle
