President Carter ‘s Unknown (potential) Assassins


Although it seems forgotten about today and barely made the news back in 1979 when it occurred, a plot to assassinate President Jimmy Carter was uncovered in 1979.

Carter was facing criticism from the media and his opponents for being a mediocre President. The President was due to appear on national TV and it was widely predicted that he was about to announce new initiatives and major changes in government in the run up to the 1979 Presidential elections. Shortly before this, on May 5th 1979 Carter addressed a crowd in Los Angeles Civic Center Mall.

A few days later, a story broke that a “grubby transient" with a history of mental illness had been arrested and was being held on suspicion of the attempted assassination of the president in L.A. A Secret Service spokesman downplayed the arrest stating the incident was about as "nothing as these things get."

But then, another news item appeared reporting that the 35-year-old suspect was being held in lieu of $50,000 on charges of conspiring to kill the president. Raymond Lee Harvey, an Ohio-born unemployed drifter, according to his story, was approached by three men who asked him to fire a pistol containing blanks to create a diversion whilst the real assassins, two hit men, fired high power rifles at the President. Harvey stayed in the Alan Hotel overnight sharing a room with one of the conspirators Osvaldo Espinoza Ortiz.

Police investigating the story found a room in the Alan Hotel rented under the name "Umberto Camacho," the name of an alleged conspirator given by Ortiz, containing a shotgun case and three unspent rounds of ammunition. The occupant had checked out of the hotel room the day of the alleged assassination attempt. The real identity of the two supposed hitmen remains unknown whilst Lee Harvey was released without charge.

A bizarre link between the names Raymond Lee Harvey and Osvaldo Espinoza and Lee Harvey Oswald has been cited in conspiracy theories. Many believe the attempt spooked Carter and his sweeping reforms never materialized .President Carter cancelled his address to the nation on TV and went into seclusion after allegedly telling his aides, "I have lost control of the government."


Since leaving office Carter has revealed there were further plots on his life.

“Perseus” – The Spy in the Manhattan Project


Beginning in 1991 Russian intelligence Colonel Vladimir Chikov wrote a number of articles in Russian periodicals discussing ‘Perseus’, the only Soviet spy who successfully evaded U.S. national security at Los Alamos during the Manhattan project. The secrets leaked back to Moscow eventually led to the Soviets developing their own atomic weapons.

Two people linked to possibly being the spy (though never proven) were Theodore Hall and Phillip Morrison. Both men were researchers for the Manhattan project. Morrison was publicly accused of being Perseus in 1999. But all allegations were denied.

Several spies were named and captured over the years but Perseus remains a mystery to this day. The evidence came from KGB archives that were briefly revealed in the 90s but were subsequently closed and there is some doubt placed on their authenticity.

England’s Phantom Flier


During the last few months of 1973 and on into early 1974 a number of unexplained helicopter sightings were fascinating the media and public in Northern England. Flights were almost always reported under the cover of darkness and were often during bad weather over the Derbyshire Peaks and the Cheshire plains.

The Tabloids all mentioned the possibility that IRA terrorists, illegal immigrants, drug smugglers, and foreign spies . Sightings continued into early 1974.

The Daily Mirror described the pilot as having “a devil-may-care “ attitude and the story having all the drama of a James Bond script. “This guy is a madman, or he’s a great pilot” it proclaimed.The Home Office wanted action after looking into 27 separate reports compiled by the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) on this phantom chopper pilot. Even the MoD were contacted for help tracking him down.

But with no drug smuggling, illegal immigration, IRA or foreign espionage activity ever proven the flights ceased and the reports stopped soon afterwards.

The Special Branch file was closed in October 1974 with the comment “the helicopter and pilot were never identified.”
He never has been.

The Poe Toaster


No it’s not a new breakfast appliance!

The Poe Toaster is a nickname for the unknown person(s) who would dress in a black cape with a wide brimmed hat and a white scarf and visit Edgar Allan Poe’s grave on January 19th each year. Poe’s birthday.

The mysterious toaster would swoop in under cover of the early morning darkness, place three roses and a bottle of Martell cognac at the graveside and then vanish into the early morning gloom.

According to the legend the visits started in the 1930s or 1940s and continued until 1998 when a successor kept up the tradition until 2010. The visits and tradition appear to have stopped since then.

Enoch Soames : Mysterious Time Traveller?

Enoch Soames is the title of a short story by the British writer Max Beerbohm and features in Beerbohm's anthology, ‘Seven Men’ (pub. 1919). Set in 1897 ,It intertwines the concepts of time travel with the story of a pact with the Devil.

The main character, Enoch Soames, is the author and publisher of a string of largely ignored poetry books. His appearance is described as "vague" except for his persistent habit of always wearing a particular grey waterproof cape and soft black hat.

Soames is so concerned by his lack of recognition that he agrees to a deal with the Devil. The deal involves being catapulted 100 years ahead to 1997, into the British Museum Reading Room. This is so Soames can research his own legacy. The price is Soames’ soul belongs to the Devil.

Fast forward to 3rd June 1997, The Reading Room of the British Museum at 2:10 PM. A person dressed very like Soames, as described in Beerbohm’s story, suddenly appeared and began searching through numerous volumes on the shelves. After little more than half an hour the mysterious character then slipped out of sight from onlookers behind the stacked bookshelves and disappeared.

Raymond Joseph Teller (the quieter partner in Penn and Teller) was believed to be behind the stunt although he has never admitted to it. The identity of the mysterious person dressed like Soames at the British Museum has never been identified.
