The A-10 was built for the gun, not the gun for the PLane. As far as i know it is the only aircraft built around a single gun platform. They took a big risk, but it paid off.
No,the GAU-8 was made for the A-10,Suppose a F-16 could carry a GAU-8,it wouldn't be as good as the A-10 since its made of paper,whereas the A-10 has armor which can stand a direct hit from a 23mm shell.That is also why the Harrier is not being used,the 2 Aden gunpods are as good as 1 GAU-8,just that the armor and the armaments (more range and more bombs) make the A-10 better.
