So will we get charged for murder when we get mad at our computers and shoot it? A jury of computers will be selected.

I don' t believe artificial intelligence is ever going to be a serious contender with the human brain, ( Genuinely self aware, a sense of spatial perception, etc.)

What makes you so certain that we humans aren't just biological computing objects?

If we were a program/thread ourselves it would explain why we wouldn't have any knowledge of our existence prior or post our existence. Prior to living we aren't instantiated and post living the Global garbage collector gets us.

Also if I were to create a simulation model I would ensure that the AI entities would not be aware that they were virtual themselves.

I don't believe a computer could ever appreciate the night sky, or understand the world around them, in the way that a human brain can, and interact with it, for better or worse...

It would be just properties and parameter settings to accomplish this. If you create a Human object the feel good parameter would be bumped up when observing or interacting with certain things such as a night sky.

I don't think we have the computing power now to simulate a universe nor the basic reusable components/objects available to make it feasible but I see it possible in the future.

I question if it would actually be possible to hack another persons mind?

Technically speaking, two different persons would be similar to different computers, with two different cpu architectures, different coding languages, etc, etc.

We may not even be able to interface two different humans, let alone hack each other (or have a computer hack us).

It is possible look at the many social controlling programs present designed to make people buy things they don't need for what ever reason. The hack has to appear not to exist and fit in as normal everyday life then the human mind(s) wont detect its being hacked or controlled.

EX:
WMD WMD WMD. Can you see any affects from these words of the past today?

I am soooooo tired of Ray Kurzweil and his Quasi-Athiest Religion Transhumanism he is so afraid of dying and finding out what is next and hopes that technology will save him!

He is an incredibly intelligent man but this pipe dream of his keeps changing dates...do your research this is Techno-Snake Oil.

I have an degree in computer science, I am a computers scientist and Network designer...I can tell you if computers get intelligence it will be similar but more likely ALIEN to ours!

The Transhumanist agenda will never happen nor will the Athiest-wet-dream Rapture.

And if it does count me OUT there are more problems with computers...do you want a backdoor into your thoughts? Do you want your mind hacked? Do you want to work for the rest of your existence to keep paying for Upgrades? How about being Re-written, or far scarier ERASED? Use some real logic this is not better than our fleshy bags of mostly water...

Fine we count you out!

But don't stand in my way... I am with Ray all the way on this. We have a chance to vastly implove everything about our lives and we should take it.

The view that it's us v's them in some kind of a skynet style war ironically would be people such as yourself who oppose people such as me to achieve virtual immortality, and not AI robots killing off humans.

Humans are on the cusp of an evolutionary jump of our own making....

If you don't want to be a part of that... then wither and die at a normal human pace.... we won't stop you or force anything other than what you want on you....

But.... Don't try and stop us from being all we can be!!

Korg.

Stand in your way? Are you a computer expert, in any field of IT? or just a User...if you are only a user you trust your consciousness to developers! They can barely make browsers compatible and secure...LOL how naive...take a good look at well Siri works as an example, you are duped into believing this is intelligence. I cannot wait!

I will opt out, but I will be first in line to hack you!

And immortality? LOL you again are naive. Data degrades, breaks, is easily erasable by outside influences. You will be a slave to an eternal upgrades lol you really should think this through a bit this is not the next step in human evolution.

We are already defined by technology and we already are different than we were 20 years ago. Wet-wiring will only make you dependent on resources not immortal...

Typical opportunistic thinking. The safety of the human species is nothing in comparison to your visions of immortality and omnipotence as a virtual entity. Even though you possess no realistic comprehension of what such a state would entail.

I think Ray is ahead on many of his predictions, BUT there's a lot of research going on right now on the human brain and in AI. While we may not achieve artificial human-level intelligence by 2029, I do think human-chatbot relationships will be even more possible since people were forming relationships with ELIZA, a computer chatbot created in the 1960's. If people could be drawn in by ELIZA even after being told how ELIZA worked back in the 1960's then I see no reason why people won't be now or in 2029, especially after numerous enhancements due to advances in AI software and our understanding of the human mind. A lot of it's just mimicing the emotional and behavioral nuances of real people.

A person can know something is just an illusion and yet still form a relationship. How many guys form a relationship with their car? Just imagine a chatbot that can learn from you and has a compatible personality. A chatbot that's very easy to use and expand on. A chatbot that could potentially interact with you via robotic toys or games.

I rather die and let people who love me resonate who I was and what I did. Imagine 8 billion people who don't die, who just wander without any goal just consuming and looking for another planet to destroy. How do you power this evolutionary technology with batteries, electricity? What will they eat for eternity? Will you have a kill switch? 8 Billion people who are immortal, sure the elite will just share all this fine and dandy technology for free and remove money and let us all live happily ever after. *Smack* Wake the F*** up!

Like I said we are really advanced as we are, we regenerate we need very little sustenance (sustenance that keeps growing back just for us with a bit of work and suffering), we make waste that coexists with nature, we can think for ourselves and we make bad choices like wanting to be immortal and cheat death. Suffering is what makes life worth living, anything worth doing will take sacrifice and suffering. If you don't want to suffer then life will have no point and I don't mean suffering like getting 50 lashes or sticking needles under your finger nails, I mean labor for the greater good achieving a goal that will not make us into walking toasters.

Life is bigger than us, we have limits for a reason and we might find a way to cheat them but we wont last in that state. Count me out.

The world of hte future is not for the lazy, it's for the ambitious. Why do you fail to see this. AI will be used productively. There might be some people who get drawn in and this ruins their life, but all technologies can be abused. Society and individuals will adapt to new technology, as we always have. You can't just bury these things. We can't go back in time and reset the clock. We have to deal with the new knowledge we have and learn how to be responsible despite all the challenges we face. We will suffer pitfalls be we'll rebound. Some of us will fail but the bulk of us will succeed. Personal accountability and sacrifice and family and society and all of these other traits we have traditionally valued will continue to be valued because they're the sustenance that allows our species to survive.

Nothing will stay exactly the same, but it doesn't have to. For example, I disagree that same-sex couples adopting kids can provide the same environment as heterosexual couples because I feel evolution has too much weight. This is not to say homosexual men/woman can't help children, but that I don't think they're equal to heterosexual parents. However, new knowledge and even new technology will eventually enable us to change the fundamentals of the family and one day perhaps allow for same-sex parents to provide an equal environment to children as their heterosexual counterparts. And who knows what other forms of family will occur, but in all of these family structures they have a common bond in that they're providing an environment for children to grow.

What will other technologies or knowledge do to traditional values? What about thought reading technology and prosthetics that're nearly as good or better than the normal body parts? What about genetic technology that allows us to switch on/off genes? There're so many things that could go wrong, but things can go right too. If you sit and only focus on the things that can go wrong you'll never be happy because the future always has and always will be filled with these kinds of challenges.

Errrr... Actually you should perhaps inquire as to ones profession before you jump to conclusions...

I am a mathematician by all definitions but have been directly involved in teaching theoretical physics / the design of the uk IP business from it's inception back in the early nineties.... I have worked as a contractor and advisory for the likes of the British Aerospace industry, the MOD and local government swell as some large investment banks.

So Yes I know a thing or two about technology and I highly suspect since I'm 40 years old now that I have had far more experience than most would have done in the same time.

What do I do today.... I am a self employed technologist, I essentially go through a business looking at their systems and providing them with a 3-5 year technology plan. I understand and have accurately predicted before hand the movement of technology.

I'll give you one nugget that you may do with whatever you wish.... No one not even me or even ray Kurzwiel should ever profess to know everything.... I do not and neither does prof Kurzwiel..... This is especially true of IT as this simply is such a wide subject it would be impossible to know all there is to know in a single individual...

So please stop with the are you a user crap o.k.?

I think the problem you are having with the concept is you are looking at a single piece of the puzzle and saying it's an ugly picture...

Learn to look beyond your horizons at what may at first appear to be completely unconnected and look for the overall direction as opposed to the individual elements.

Providing a sensory input based on trained responses to a given sensory input is easy...literally...we do it to animals all the time.

Now, for people:

How do you hack my mind when you know not the language, the process structure, or even the physical layout...and it changes continuously?

You don't.

You may think in images, I may think in numbers, Joe may think in scents, Susan thinks in all of the above, Timmy does the same, but backwards. And, we can all come to the same conclusions given the same external sensory input, but have extremely different (and unique) ways of getting to that conclusion.

Trust me this will become a reality within our own lifetimes.... within the next 20 years the rate at which technology will be progressing means for every year of your life it would add another year on top.... essentially at that point it would be virtual immortality....

No matter how it happens, should it progress far enough, we will be machines with digital copies of our consciousness uploaded to a hard drive. We will be androids. And at that point, "Korg Trinity" is a virtual entity. Nothing but 1's and 0's.

And according to you, this is not just something to be expected, but something to be excited about, to anticipate. I don't necessarily agree. Considering what we have done with technology up to this point...

Yes Jonny, but what about all the fake needs that society have created to make money. We make decisions based on money, not based on family values, you are way off. The country makes decisions based on economy and what gives it more material goods. We went to Iraq or Afghanistan because of democracy? Really? Wake up, you have been sold a dream and this dream is what they say it is.

I have a hard time believing a technology that will rival the human body, I don't think you appreciate what we are. Any improvement will just be an illusion like upgrading your Iphone from 5s to 5c.

Human nature is greedy, gluttonous, prideful, lustful, envious, sloth and wrathful, there is not cure for these except human decision and will, we haven't mastered this and you want to give immortality to some, like Bush or Cheney or another bad figure. Sorry, you sound like a good person, but you are acting naive at the moment.

We are anyway..... You can reduce an entire human being.. describe them perfectly in binary code..... though if you are talking star treck style scanning of every molecules, if it were printed on paper it would reach from here to the moon..... though if you really wanted you can go and download a copy of the human genome here ....... The source code

You thinking far too.... well.... 2 dimensionally...

Yes we will indeed be able to upload our personalities but that doesn't mean you the actual you would be immortal... it would just mean there was a carbon copy simulation that acted like you.

What I'm talking about is the actual you living on.... and I do mean living not as a downloaded copy into some kind of artificial body.

Yes we will have direct network capabilities and no it doesn't need to be wet wired invasive in the sense of surgery...

How I hear you ask..

The funny thing is you already know... but most have dismissed it as science fiction..... The answer is nanites.

Maybe those at the very top or who're otherwise wealthy without deserving it only care about money or indulgence or power, but I believe the vast bulk of humanity are good inside. We may disagree and argue and war, but it's hte good parts of us that keeps us going and alive.

I never said we don't have problems. I just said we'll find a way. Good values will triumph over bad ones, but the bad ones get all the news.

And at some point, you would be forced to replace more and more organic tissue with synthetic replicas until your entire body had been transformed from organic tissue into a mass of biotechnology. In other words, an android. Which means "you" is as simple as the program designed to reflect you precisely as you were when your mind was copied and uploaded into whatever storage system they would keep it in. Shut down the processing units and "you" are gone. Completely. An immobile and unresponsive piece of hardware containing the entirety of "you", like a bird in a lead box. Until they turn you on again.
