I thought it was your Second Amendment rights!! Glad to know you are all on the ball with defending your rights even at the expense of dozens of mass shootings that just seem to keep happening. Something does need to change... exactly what that is, is up to the American people but to continue to allow people to have guns, the type of guns and the amount of guns and ammo has nothing to do with your constitution. They had muskets when it was written. Are you suggesting each and every individual should be entitled to possess surface to air missiles, tanks or nuclear arms?? The whole argument about your rights being interfered with are absolute rubbish. I guess a country like Australia realised that crazy people with guns more readily kill innocent people in larger numbers and more frequently than crazy people who can only carry a knife. I personally would place my bets on myself being able to run away from a person with a knife than a gun. Unfortunately you continue to allow a minority of people who happen to be gun owners and also statistically own the majority of guns to destroy any rational discussion about controlling them.

Good luck!!

Keep your guns America and continue to see far to many innocent people massacred. Your choice however y

Umm Australia gun homicides peaked at 123 in 1988 but went down to
1995: 67
1994: 76
1993: 64
1992: 96
1991: 84
1990: 79
1989: 80

After the ban:
2011: 25
2010: 36
2009: 37
2008: 27
2007: 28
2006: 41
2005: 15
2004: 15
2003: 54
2002: 45
2001: 47
2000: 57
1999: 50
1998: 57
1997: 79
1996: 104

Wow Australia is your modern day war field before the ban, it reminds me of a modern day wild wild west/sarcasm. You're a a real rational person bringing up surface to air missile, by using your logic ( they only had muskets then) we should restrict the 1st amendment since they didn't have twitter, the internet, phones, fax machines, ect. I mean think about all the lives/money we can save if we start arresting people for their views on gay marriage, abortion, and race heck the police could of stopped people who bomb abortion clinics, weather underground, Timothy Mcveigh, child predators, Occupy Wall Street, LA riots, Crown Heights Riots, and the Detroit Riot before they ever got out of control. I guess we should also change the 4th amendment to allow cops to search personal property with a warrant because the founders could of never had imaged things like cars, our crime rate, the weapons criminals have, drugs, child porn, ect. Will you also support changing the 1st and 4th amendments to help save lives and cut down crime?

every person is entitled to an opinion......including those in favour of guns. I think the key thing that you miss in this whole debate is the fact that many of us just cant understand why as a population america doesnt say enough...no more.

many people reply only in the hope that we can say to you that if you look at us as an example things can be different.

one of the best replies on here was from an american living in australia. (sorry..i should have looked up your username).

what a great insight from someone who has seen it from both sides.

thats it for me now on this subject. i wont be replying to any more posts on this subject. my heart goes out to those innocent victims of all these mass shootings and their families.

When you see "gun violence" you know they are lying. What does it matter how the violence and murder happen? It is trying to separate a turd and determine which part of the turd is worse.

I think the American public have yet to say, "enough...no more" to many things before they ever considered saying that to their right to own a gun.

The rate things are going, the only thing keeping their tyrannical government at bay for the time being is the fact that it knows the so-called gun-toting nut bars would blow heads off shoulders if they take things too far.

You want to take that last protection from them?

23.2 million vs. 317 million. Not only does that difference make it less feasible by the day that they could do anything in the way of taking our firearms vs. Australia. It also shows that for very person in Australia there are about 13.5 here. Statistics work both ways and of course a country with 13.5 times more people is going to have more violence. I don't think most Australians realize how densely populated most of the US is.

Ehh enough now. No one is going to "win" here. We want our rights. Others think the gun is to blame, not the hands it's in and don't want us to have our rights. There is, quite frankly, no reason to continue this in my opinion. So I'm off to go to the range. It calms me before races.

Oh one more thing. I'm so sick of hearing about "assault rifles" and bans of certain weapons. People with any experience can fire a lever action or pump action with in a rate comparable to a semi auto (which IS NOT an assault rifle, assault rifles are SELECT FIRE) and with comparable magazines or tubes. I personally grew up shooting small caliber rifles and my 60 year old Sears and Roebuck (Savage) .22 bolt action can be accurately emptied in a 5" group (18 rounds +1) in about 30 seconds in the right hands.

You get 100 points for the act of putting words I haven't spoken into my mouth.

At what point in time did I say I didn't care about people being killed? Stop being so damn ridiculous mate.

Oh, so you do care?
So, when will you push for more strict laws governing fire and the tools used to create fire? After all, if you are for stopping people from being killed, you will want to outlaw/ban those items used to kill people.

Kind of hypocritical and un-human to not want all people to live.

First off, we aren't friends or mates.

Secondly, it seems that the only way Anti-2nd Amendment people get the point is to use the ridiculous nature of their argument against them.

You saying that the only factor involved with mass gun killings is access to guns. If an Australian is going to kill someone with a gun, they're going to get a gun and then they are going to shoot people with it.

There are more factors to consider than just the ease of access to firearms so please stop towing the line like a good little follower and come up with an argument that we can take seriously.

There is no arguing with complete stupidity im afraid, arguing gun control with an American is like trying to explain to a baby why sucking their toes is bad for them.

Its not quite an apples-to-apples comparison, though. The numbers posted for Australia were for firearm-related homicides. Your numbers include suicides, which are the single largest category of firearm related fatalities.

The number of firearm-related homicides in the US has dropped significantly from its highs in the early 90s.

But don't take my word for it.

we as a nation had a mass murder and our prime minister had the balls to stand up and say never again. i was only a teenager and my parents had a rifle in the top of the cupboard. they handed it in and that was it...end of story.

The balls?

Howard didn't have balls, None that reach a certain position do, If they had balls they would loose them and their lives or someone that matters to them if they were to ever break wind incorrectly.

They are all puppets and actors directing their own show and pulling each others strings following a system of deceit to mold their respective societies towards certain goals.

Because if a bunch of rogue gang members armed with knives in the outback at some camping spot came up on some "easy prey" the easy prey would be dead meat.

Did you just watch Mad Max or something?

So because of your almost impossible scenario guns should be legal in Australia?

What would a bunch of gang member's be doing in the outback, are they there because they went rogue and the rest of their gang is after them and thats the reason the preyed upon the innocent campers?

But if the "Easy prey" were carrying pistols they could just live to tell about it.

How so?

I assume you mean that if guns were legal to possess that they could have pistols, but wouldn't the gang member's then have guns of their own, especially if they had gone rogue.

Add: By the way, people get stabbed and killed that way in Australia a LOT. And since hardly anyone has a gun, they can't survive the encounter.

They get shot quite often as well.

Quite a few do have guns, especially those in the outback.

Gun Control measure are in the works California, NYC, CT, and NJ. It will never happen nation wide. I do not think a European can understand or appreciate the volume of guns that are legally owned in the US, and the number of illegal guns is extremely large yet uncertain. Gun Control will simply create more criminals just as drug control as created more criminals. It will force a tipping point if wide spread measures were put in place a la Australia and it will likely get messy.

These are the gun control measures I adhere to:

1. Treat every firearm as if it's loaded.
2. Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Always be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
4. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to fire.
