Ok, this is kinda doom, or more accurately solar doom porn.

For those of you not in the know this is really important. From my own professional point of view, if I'm not all over this then I'm in for a bad day when it happens.

While at the time there was potential for x-flares from this subject, nothing came to pass. TFFT.

What was surprising was the 2, yep 2 x-flares emanated from the approaching face. Initially neither was expected to be Earth bound, until today;

If it does .. makes me glad that am far from so-called civilization and more than capable of doing just fine without the electronic gadgets and gizmos .. will be relaxing in my hammock having a pint ..or two .. not my concern what happens to so-called civilization its needed a reset for a long time .. out here life will go on as it always has ..

I agree in some sense, yet another no. Like yourself I am remote from drivelisation, but I do have to interact with it, hence the relevance.

True .. at times must deal with it .. but looking at it longer term civilization would rebuild and with luck into something better than the cesspool it is now .. as the knowledge would still be available it would be a matter of time after the fools and idiots killed each other off then the more sane ones would be busy rebuilding ..

Yeah, this is the kind of doom porn I can dive into... as it's not total b.s. (or statistically improbable).

I am sensitive to loss of the grid from a selfish perspective... living in a water poor area that averages 110 degree daytime temps in summer and has dismal local food production, an EM event that burns out the grid and communication/ transportation would be a nightmare (at least for a few days until merciful death comes).

It's another point of proof that our leadership is ... lacking... in that a measly couple million dollars would safeguard against this being debilitating for more than a few days, in my own poor understanding of the matter.

I have grown to like and depend on what electricity brings us on a daily basis... and I would miss it if it was gone... until I didn't.

Bring it....we need to teach the newer generations how to go outside and actually do something. I didn't have portable electronics as a kid and am thankful they weren't around then. I think knocking out the power grid will do a lot of harm in the short term, but be for the best in the long run.

Solar flares and CMEs are one of the more likely disasters I've always been concerned with. I had to write a report in college on them and the "Smart Grid". Luckily, the smart grid is supposed to help take care of this, but if the storm is big enough to knock out all the systems in the US I don't believe it would help a whole lot. It isn't exactly hardened against a CME event.

Ha, I never really thought of it from that perspective, good point.

If the data is accurate then I suspect we may see some fireworks. Happy enough with a glancing blow, a direct hit from an x-whateva, not so happy.
