All trips into deep space (outside our solar neighborhood using some kind of exotic "FTL" or warp drive) are one-way. Even if a ship was somehow able to implode into itself and vector off to some nearby star, the trip might seem "instantaneous" to them, but time is going to chug right along for us.

Here's the thing though, to make a working warp propulsion system, it's necessary to know the underlying mechanism of how gravity itself works. In that regard, it's legitimate as a topic of scientific research. Get one licked, and you'll be able to do the other. (Not to mention the basis of some unified field theory.)

If you regard gravity from a general relativity perspective, you shoulnd't count mass as mass but as it's energy equivalent. Apparently there's some limit to how much energy may exist at a given point in space for a given time. (I suspect that's what these interferometer test rigs are looking for.) Exceed that limit and spacetime expands. Somehow they're connected. There's some density gradient of spacetime that causes a change in distance as it's passed over. Change in distance over change in time is acceleration, is it not? And that's your gravity. (Since matter is just packets of super-dense energy.)

Part of this relationship has to do with the speed of light. It's is maintained as a ratio that a photon travels in space for a given time over a known distance. (However since time and space can be made to expand or contract under certain conditions, it should be considered a coefficient rather than a constant.) It probably has to do with photons as being one of the means to carry energy through space.

I suspect the other part relating to energy density is somewhere in here... en.wikipedia.org... (The electric/plasma universe guys will probably love that part.)

So if you have the means to exceed a certain energy density at a point in space, it should act just as the mass equivalent of that energy does. Under the right conditions, energy should also become matter. (Perhaps the atoms we're made of are a particular type of warp-bubble singularities themselves?) Likewise if there's anything to virtual-pair annihilations forming a quantum foam in a vacuum, then it may be plausible that a strong enough magnetic field could might be able to void that space of pair formation. (The pair halves are charged, are they not?) The differential effect of that void may then effectively work as negative energy.

That seems plausible enough, so why wouldn't NASA and various physics researchers be on it? Not to mention who doesn't want to see us really get outside the Solar System.

As for the current business angle? I could only imagine if you were in the super-conductor business, it seems like this research would be an interesting venture to get into. (Outside of making medical scanning machines or devising mag-lev systems.) If it works, the first in will be very profitable. (At least until we move past a resource limited economy, in which case that doesn't really matter anymore.)

I'm also curious about the Fermi Paradox. Some compare us to ants in the big scheme of things. Ants are perfectly fine to ignore... They do what they do without hurting anything. Until they can get inside your house. It seems only then they're worthy of attention. Thus if the technology works, I suspect it should answer the Fermi Paradox question pretty quick. (Unlike ants, we should be able to communicate. Hopefully anyone out there will be willing to talk things through first in a way we understand before resorting to harsher methods.)

So we would be talking to their great grandchildren in that time. How much food would need to be aboard that ship to make a trip like that. Stuff would wear out in that time, you would need a factory aboard to make new parts. It doesn't seem practical to do this, that ship keeps getting bigger and bigger.

My understanding of the technology is limited but from what I can gather the ship itself isnt moving through space, the space around the ship is folded so its not inertial movement in the traditional sense of the word. So Space paint shouldnt be a problem. It will simply float past and around the ship.

So, theorhetically cool for the ship and crew, not so cool for anything that is forced to warp around the ship though...like a planet or a moon.

If a bubble of space time 10 meters in diameter is shot through the core of a planet at 10 X the speed of light, it's probably not going to be a good day for anything alive on that world. Even if there's no life, the chain reaction might even destabilise the unfortunate planet's entire solar system and parent star(s).

I would assume something like the D-Wave, or whatever new and improved version will be around when this ship is built will do the navigating and actual flying of the ship...the crew will be for routine maintenance and any possible meet and greets when they arrive i suppose.

I've not read this thread completely, but i'm a little amused at this news when i recall the dozens, probably hundreds of times i've had someone claim the sole reason they don't believe ETs visit Earth is because the journey here would be impossible.

That's understandable. You want an official word of consent before making any conclusions despite historical and financial records making the official narrative shady at best. But Gary McKinnon, a fellow UK brother, was acknowledged as hacking into NASA, Pentagon, DOD, and the Navy for almost 2 years, and has stated that there is a secret space program and alien tech.

Just FYI, he has to be monitored and restricted whenever using a computer or internet now for life (for years he had a complete ban), his financial statements and current location are monitored 24/7, faces constant extradition threats and harassment from the U.S. who want to imprison him for 60 years (in one case even execute him), and he has not even gained a penny for all of this trouble or tried to. I think he still lives with family. He has autism and it was his life passion and gift to hack, without hurting others, and freely use the internet. He has surrendered all of that to bring us this news. Not a 100% on this, but technically the ship isn't moving faster than light, space is being bent. Picture an automated walkway at an airport where the ground beneath your feet moves.

The whole principle of not traveling faster than light remains intact...space just gets shorter

Just relaying what I was told. He was puzzled by the incident himself. The bullets weren't being deflected. They were, according to him, curving around the object and then resuming their original trajectory. I don't think he was hallucinating. I'm aware that this makes no sense based our understanding of physics. After he told me this story he just sat, staring at the sky and shaking his head. "Damnedest thing I ever seen," he said.

And ...all some scientist has to do is claim they are positive there is limitless oil on the planet orbiting Alpha Centauri and our gov will get this ship built in a year Absent that we will continue to spend a Billion a day on the middle east.
