We Americans keep hearing how "great" Socialism in Europe is.

Maybe we hear only the "good" and not so much the "bad" (if any) ?

With things like total universal healthcare and whatnot, the taxes must be ultra high.

But we must analyze the cost/benefit ratios and see if it is really worth it.

Even if some forms seem OK in European countries, how would those work in America with all the corruption?

We know from history that many "Socialisms" have failed especially ones under the "Communist" cloaks thru 1990 or so.

And I wonder how former USSR nations are doing now compared to before?

Are "Western" European countries taking cues from former Soviet systems?

Very interesting to compare.

The author of this article has some revealing points;

Look at some of the taxes and other hardships one writer for the Examiner listed after living in Germany for years:

There is a 20% sales tax on everything. There is a TV tax, radio tax, dog tax, 50% death tax for many, taxes overall total of about 65% of one’s income. If you don’t survive, there is always welfare.

There is no Central Air. They use dinky radiator-heaters in winter.

Gasoline is $7-$10 dollars a gallon because of government taxes, taxes Mr. Obama dreams of.

People can’t afford mortgages unless they are 50-year mortgages.

What Socialism Will Look Like in the United States

What says Americans?

"What will socialism look like in America?"

Hopefully it won't look like anything because hopefully it won't exist.

It will look like Obama's dream came true.

Ask us all in about 10 years what it will look like.... We'll be able to tell you EXACTLY what it looks like via firsthand experience if things continue on the same path they are now.

It's already starting to happen.

Seriously.

How do people not see it?

I'd like to hear from the ATS members who live in places like that, to see how bad it is....

Personally, I don't like the sounds of it

Too much government
Too many taxes and
Too much of 'You can do this but not that' crap!!

Think I'll pass, if I may

I'm not sure you can pass on it. I think it might be like Obamacare.... You can't opt out without repercussions.

We should not introduce any higher level of socialism until appropriate technology allows labor to be diminished.
Essentially, before MANDATING equal wealth we must first create a grid that supports it, otherwise we'll just fold in on ourselves into the dark ages.

The current administration is stupid because they shifted focus away from sustainable grid towards mandates

What Will Socialism Look Like in the United States

Every hospital like the VA hospitals.
High unemployment.
A reduction of the middle class.
Higher taxes.
Fewer freedoms.

Hence why I added, 'if I may'.....*sigh*
I really don't like to be forced into anything, such as Obamacare

Our government does not like socialism. With their track record they will screw up the socialism so bad it will give it a bad name forever. Our present government can take a simple, cheap, effective idea and make a miserable, expensive, mess out of it. But we can all agree that they are consistent at this and they are good at screwing things up.

Me either Snarky. It amazes me how many folks are quite fine with sitting back and letting the government take care of everything for them. They never realize that if they are giving them everything, they can also take everything. A dangerous position most folks would never want to be in regardless of how good the packaging looked.

Done properly it might look better than the train wreck we have now

Buuuuut that's just the issue: the government created the train wreck we have now. Don't really trust them to fix it.

On a smaller scale and much less frightening, just think about when you have a pet

You feed it, groom it, bath it
Once a year or so, take it to get it's shots
So on and so on....
You are the Master and have full control due to the fact that the dog/cat is dependent on you

Now then, since you are in total control, you can stop all that when you choose to:
NO food
NO water
NO vaccinations
NO indoor housing
NO car rides ...[that's for the poochie dogs]
NO nothing

When one is totally dependent on the government, their fate is in their hand, literally, in kinda the same manner
Your are owned by the government and they are your Master

***No animals were harmed during this faux scenario***

I believe I can think of two reasons for supporting Socialism in this country. Neither of which are persuasive to me, but I've heard them.

1.) The American people are bitter, greedy, clingers. They don't have the sense to pick the right policies or vote the right way. The only way to move the country forward is to let "The Best and Brightest" make all the decisions for us. Otherwise, Democracy will just get in the way and slow us down.

2.) While it may be true that we may become just a little bit poorer overall, we can all be finally equal! Equal rights! No more greed or excessive wealth, people being the same. Isn't that worth sacrificing a few measly dollars for?

Those have convinced some people, even those on ATS. I don't trust myself to say more.

I've lived many years in Europe and frankly socialism gets a really bad rap here in the US. C'mon, like crony capitalism isn't the most predatory system on the planet. Most of the crap we hear is simply propaganda.

Here's what I think as an example, no American citizen should be without healthcare. Note I said citizen. That does not include legal aliens or illegal aliens, just citizens. Will that cost money? Yes. If the US quit waging war on the rest of the world it would not be an issue.

If we had real capitalism in the US as opposed to what we have now then things would be better. Some socialism ideas would not hurt us either. Just my take on the matter (not that it will happen) as the corporations have the US in a stranglehold. All that exists now is the power of profit.

Why don't you just go there and see for yourself?!

I know, it's easier to just believe whatever Rush Limbaugh tells you than do anything to learn for yourself.

All systems have weaknessses, it stupid to think that one is all bad and another has no faults at all.

Europe has a lot of happy people, or at least it did until we crashed the world economy and exported our corrupt banking to them (I don't think it's a coincidence that England had the same housing crash that we did at the same time).

Europeans have lots of freedoms, again you should learn about something before you criticize it. They at least have laws protecting their privacy there that have been taken away from us.

It would be an extremely corrupt system. In socialism power is centralized. A few autocrats or oligarchs will determine your fate. Some people will fight the system, then the system will kill them , then it morphs into authoritariansim.
