4.5 Trillion *times* 10 Billion *equals* 4.5e.+21!!!

So by my calculation that's...

So by my calculation that's...

40.25 Billion Trillion Planets in the Universe that we can currently calculate!!!
Or...

40,250,000,000,000,000,000,000!!!

I think!!!

Peace everybody!!!

Doesn't matter and I don't know.
If your trying to insinuate that based on the math we're not alone in the Universe, your wrong.
Other then God, we are the highest form of intelligence out there.
Until humans develop ways to go to other galaxies and planets to sprinkle DNA of different species of plants and animals, there's nothing out there.
Just rocks and gases.
Humans RULE....

And the most narrow-minded post of the week goes to..............................!

Hey blame google not me. That is what it spit out.
Wait no.. it was 9 billion times 500 billion lol

I should have explained pal...

I too typed 9b multiplied by 500b & got 4.5e+21!!!

But no calculator I have at hand can decode that number into zeros!!!

So I worked out how to get 4.5e+21

By multiplying smaller numbers...

9 multiplied by 500 equals 4,500...
Multiplied by 1 billion equal 4.5,000,000,000,000
Multiplied by 1 billion* = 4.5e+21...

It was more a case of working out the single digit for 4.5e+21!!!

Which came to 4,500,000,000,000,000,000,000*!!!

Peace Fire!!!

Lol! Doesn't that number tell you how amazing our world is and how little we know? Good stuff.

It really does!!!

Fantastic thoughts are abound when thinking of the vastness of the Universe!!!

However...
There is always a "but"...

What about all the stars that are long dead that we can still "see"???...
It's really just light that hasn't stopped travelling as of yet!!!
So those Planets have probably been engulfed by Supernova's & such...
But because they're millions of light years away we won't notice!!!

So maybe that number drops...
But another "but"... let's be honest it's still amazing!!!

S&F pal

Peace Piston!!!

9 multiplied by 500 equals 4,500...
Multiplied by 1 billion equal 4.5,000,000,000,000
it would be 4,500,000,000,000 which is 4.5 trillion.

Multiplied by 10 billion = 4.5e+21...
off by a factor of 10. 4.5 trillion by 10 billion is 4.5e+22

Which came to 40,250,000,000,000,000,000,000!!!
I don't even know how you go that, but it would be 45 with 21 zeroes after it, so 45,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. the e+22 means there are 22 powers of ten. But at least you're only off by 10 instead of being off by a billion like the experts.

OP's starting figures were off a little but the errors sort of offset each other to give a very close answer. I'm not even sure how you got your starting figures. The expert starting figures look about right but they just forgot to carry the one....billion when they multiplied, or something like that.

They are basically saying there are 100 billion other galaxies besides the Milky way, so therefore there are 100 times as many habitable planets as in the milky way. Why does 100 billion other galaxies only have 100 times as many habitable planets? That should set off huge alarm bells for anyone, you shouldn't even have to be a math expert to see the problem with that claim.

By the way, Calc98 has an online version or a downloadable version which handles all these zeroes, and it's free so there's no reason you shouldn't have a calculator to handle these numbers:

It's kind of amazing to me that we can figure out what that far away stuff is actually made of, using science. But the numbers are too vast to comprehend. I can write them down, but I'm not sure that constitutes comprehension, as they are beyond normal human thinking.

You're right it has been a long day!!!

You're right it's 4.5 multiplied by 1 billion...
Messing with so many zeros can be difficult!!!

I don't even know how you go that,

I was always taught if you multiply by so many zeros... Just add those zeros to the original number...
So wouldn't it actually be 4,500,000,000,000,000,000,000... With 23 zeros???

^^^^^^ awful my apologies I can't even count how many 0's I typed

Should read "20 zeros"...
As in 4.5 billion trillion... rather than 45 billion trillion???
Long day as I said!!!

I got the 250 by looking at the .5...
I'm wondering where it came from now as well!!!

By the way, Calc98 has an online version or a downloadable version which handles all these zeroes, and it's free so there's no reason you shouldn't have a calculator to handle these numbers

Thanks I appreciate that, something better than an iPhone from now on

Peace Arbi!!!

When you deal with exponential notation in the standard format, the number in the exponent is the number of zeroes, but ONLY if they are all zeroes.

so, 4e+22 is a 4 followed by 22 zeroes.
4.1e+22 is a 4 followed by a 1 followed by only 21 zeroes, because the "1" replaces one of the zeroes.
41e+21 is the same but this is non standard notation, which you won't find on calculator displays etc. In that case you'd add 21 zeroes but I'd recommend avoiding that notation since it's non-standard.

Either way, even if you didn't add the right amount of zero's, it is still a huge number to comprehend. Once it gets this big it doesn't even matter to add any more zeros because it is still mind bogling. The fact still remains that it is like wow!

Let me fix that for you.

According to my chosen or indoctrinated religious Belief system, I am unable to comment in an honest manner on the information you provided other than to say, I do not Believe it because of my religious beliefs.

That would have been Honest and more christian than what you gave.

To not know sarcasm when you hear it is beyond my comprehension. Ummm DUhh?

Statistically .....the numbers are so beyond logic that there's other life forms out there, even a money could figure THAT out.
Which is where we originated from too. Righttt? I can't believe you guys are that serious about my ignorance..
Seriously.
Just kidding.

Many of those billions of galaxies are so far away and the light has taken billions of years to get to us that EVERYTHING that was alive (if there was life) could be dead a LONG time ago so again again it's another case of guesswork applied to estimates!

There are at least as many stars as there are grains of sands on all the beaches in the world. So multiply that by the average number of planets per star.

Interestingly, there are more atoms in a grain of sand than there are grains of sand!

Here's an estimate as to the star/sand ration:

Stars in the universe

Don't forget, multiply the number of stars by the average number of planets per star.

In fact, there are more stars than there were grains of sand in my sandwiches when I went to the beach as a child - and that was a LOT of sand!
