Moments earlier a female police negotiator was seen talking on the phone nearby. Their release comes after a close associate of wanted fugitive Rodney Clavell told The Advertiser’s Nigel Hunt that he is armed with a .22 rifle and a cache of ammunition and has vowed to kill police if cornered.

Well obviously gun laws don't stop mad men from going postal...

In the mean time in Canada there is an almost identical situation unfolding NOW.

Two shooters simultaneously but in two different continent.

I hate Australian gun laws, we can't even have airsoft.
It sucks trying to play armies with broomsticks at my age.

Uh...it's a reasonable argument.

A .22 is not going to do anything against a squad of police, armed with mp5s and M4A1 Carbines wearing body armour.

Well even more so then.

It was just reported on TV news update that the guy is dead. From the way they were talking, he ended his own life but that is just my interpretation.

This isn't the first time the suspect has been in a shootout with police

The ex-prison guard first captured headlines back in 2004, when he was shot twice and tasered by police snipers following a massive manhunt in the Adelaide Hills.

He was armed with a shotgun and drove a 12-tonne road grader during the chase, The Advertiser reported. Clavell earned four years in prison for the daring crime.

Yup he is confirmed dead now.

FUGITIVE Rodney Clavell has been found dead. The South Australian Police Minister Tony Piccolo has confirmed to Parliament this afternoon that Clavell had died.
Police vehicles that had surrounded the building Clavell has been in for more than 12 hours have begun to leave, a further sign the massive police eoperation is over.

I didn't see which kind of .22, but ranging from a .22 magnum through .222 magnum and a .223 hornet, you are looking at 2250 to about 3050 ft/sec. Not a big bullet mind you, 35 to 50 grain, but it can pass through a type 3 vest. If it's teflon coated, it will pass easily through a type 3 vest. So saying he's only got a .22 is a bit of a miscalculation in possibilities.

BTW, teflon (TFE/PTFE) has a melting point of around 325 to 335 degrees centigrade (small range before it becomes a gas) and items can be dipped or in the alternative, sputtered using vapor deposition if you have those expensive kinds of tools and like 0.010 uniform layering.

Wonder what our illustrious decent leaders are up too? Oh Obama, we can't deal with criminals we need your CIA and your FBI and all your police force in to protect the poor unarmed people????

Nah, we need access to guns and good training without having to join the military.

I dont think you should be concentrating on the cops he cant kill with a 22, its the normal people he said he'd kill with zero armor - 22s are still deadly weapons if im not mistaken.

Yes a .22 can certainly kill, but the amount of damage that can be done is limited, compared to something semi-auto.

That was sort of the point I was trying to make.
