Washington (CNN) -- An environmental advocacy group backed by hedge fund tycoon Tom Steyer is set to unleash a seven-state, $100 million offensive against Republican "science deniers" this year, a no-holds-barred campaign-style push from the green billionaire that could help decide which party controls the Senate and key statehouses come November.

The Steyer-backed outside group, NextGen Climate, has billed itself as a progressive, pro-environment counterbalance to the wealthy oil and gas industry -- as well as the primary foil to the pro-business Koch brothers and their well-funded conservative donor network.

The outfit, launched last year by the San Francisco billionaire, has already pledged to spend heavily this midterm year in Iowa to assist the Democratic Senate nominee Bruce Braley, and in Florida, where Gov. Rick Scott is facing a difficult re-election fight against Democrat Charlie Crist.

CNN

It was bound to happen, the right has been dumping big money into politics the last few years, now the left is countering these movements with there own money. We will see if the more money changes the current moods of the nation. The right wing majority supreme court and there citizens united decision has created this situation we see today.

Just look at any climate change debate on ATS and its easy to see the Koch brothers money at work, so this should be interesting too see what happens. Most climate change deniers opinions have been crafted by propaganda now there is a force to challenge this directly.

What say you ATS?

What does he profit for doing this? Gotta follow the money.

On the surface, I wanna raise my hand and give a fark yeah..but then the realist wakes up and wonders what the angle is..he didn't get his fortune by tossing it all at positive esoteric principles....unless he is suddenly wanting a good legacy for the family name.

Addendum: I do wish he would have spent that money instead working on a highly effective solar panel for cheap so the average home owner can supplement their energy needs

I expect many many more will contribute, the infrastructure this will build, I see it expanding to more than 7 states quickly.

I don't approve of all this money in politics and there propaganda machines.

a hundred million would be better spent building some sort of solar or wind energy array. All they will be doing is lining the pockets of politicians or the owners of newspapers.

Thats funny,

It seems that the one's most influenced by propaganda are the "climate doom porners".

After all it is funny how the main topic these days is climate doom.

Forget the economy, forget jobs, forget feeding the poor, forget getting the spending under control, we need to do something about the climate.

This is the mindset of the climate change propagandist.

But hey, it's all the"deniers" fault right?

I found this rather amusing.

As the founder of the hedge fund Farallon Capital Management, Steyer made part of his fortune from investments in fossil fuels, including foreign coal investments, which has prompted charges of hypocrisy from the Koch-affiliated groups he's fond of condemning.

"Tom Steyer's investments at Farallon have lined his pockets with millions of dollars from the foreign coal industry," said James Davis, a spokesman for Freedom Partners, the Koch-backed political network. "Now he wants to burden the American people with new energy regulations to protect his current green energy investments. He's already attempting to buy the votes of Senate Democrats on Keystone, which will cost America thousands of good-paying jobs. Surely the media will call him out on the hypocrisy of his claims."

It just does'nt get any better than that.

Right. Like George Soros hasn't been dumping money to leftist candidates. I don't even think the Koch brothers have any idea about this, and you sure have a difficult time explaining it:

So its ok for the koch brothers spending money on politics and profiting from it but not for anyone else. Yes it would be amusing if it wasn't so sad for our country.

Maybe he will convince some other billionaire who doesn't believe in it yet to invest

What I find hilarious (and a bit sad) is that yes, there are a lot of Republican\conservative\right-wingers who might be considered "anti-science", but at the same time, there are a lot of Democrat\liberal\progressives who have fallen for some of the biggest pseudo-scientific scams in history.

I'd be more apt to believe the climate change thing if the solutions they were pushing were things like solar panels for every house, credits to help more Americans purchase an electric vehicle, mass transit systems involving trains and buses, and that kind of thing.

What I actually see is them talking about carbon credits for businesses and raising taxes on things like gas. In other words, what I see in their solutions are things that will help businesses and basically amount to back door poor taxes.

What I see are things like Al Gore chomping at the bit about climate change and then still traveling in a private jet.

the same pseudo-science that 94% of scientists agree upon globally from all nations, platforms, etc..
Yes...silly liberals accepting the overwhelming consensus.
They need to look only at haarp as the culprit!

You have a strange definition for "the main topic".

My question is "what do they do with 100 million dollars?"

Are they going to use that money to try and convince people that climate-doom is nigh?

Are they going to bribe, trick, manipulate voters to vote for the democrat?

Just what are they going to do with all that money?

Well op,

My problem is.... we are told c02 is the issue/ Its going to kill our planet.........ok maybe so. If this is the case and our Govts are not lying,,,,,,, why the hell are they still logging in the amazon? Why are ot our govts sorting out that issue first????? Why is Fukashima still ongoing with so little international co-operation??????? Why are govts still promoting fracking? Why are big industry still alowed tpollute with heavy metals? ETC ETC.

Until I can see these issues being sorted out I will not accept being told Im to pay green taxres for the pollution I cause.

Taxes will not sort these issues.

We also have proof climate scientists have been fixing the figured a few times in the past,,,,so excuse me for being a little sceptical.

People who fall into this climate nonsense are going to ensure the REAL PROBLEMS caused by big industry will NOT get sorted out.

Anyone whi cares about the planet will not fall for the official climat change bull. We need to ensure big business and govts are seen to be acting first....they are not. They spend all their time telling us how bad it is and no action is done regarding the above issues.

So, If this dude really wants to get me on board, spend your money on the environment...all of it. Stop trying to persuade people with botched up studies and manipulation, wasting your and our tax money on things that have to effect at all.

94% ? I thought the Cook study claimed 97%. No matter, it was a bogus study, fraud from beginning to end.

The survey by Australian global-warming activist John Cook, released recently with a massive media sendoff, is rapidly melting, as scientists and statisticians subject it to analysis. And now it's leaking out that Cook’s e-mails show he was scheming on this fraudulent survey to promote a leftist political agenda for well over a year. Cook made a big media splash in May with the publication of a study by him and several co-authors claiming to prove that climate scientists overwhelmingly support the theory that human activity is warming the planet to dangerous levels. Cook’s claims received their biggest boost on May 16, when President Barack Obama tweeted: “Ninety-seven percent of scientists agree:#climate change is real, man-made and dangerous.”

The mainstream media and climate-alarmist blogosphere uncritically accepted the Cook study and trumpeted the consensus claims as gospel. We reported on May 21 ("Global Warming 'Consensus': Cooking the Books") on the critiques of the Cook study by experts who show that Cook cooked the data. Out of the nearly 12,000 scientific papers Cook’s team evaluated, only 65 endorsed Cook’s alarmist position. That’s less than one percent, not 97 percent. Moreover, as we reported, the Cook study was flawed from the beginning, using selection parameters designed to weight the outcome in favor of the alarmist position.

Nowhere near 97%

The link will provide you with other analyses showing the 97% figure is made up for political purposes.
