The clothes? I'm pretty confused here as to what they found so offensive.

In Iran, it is illegal for a woman to appear in public without the hijab covering their face. It is usually punished by a fine.

Really? I thought they didn't have to cover their heads there. Maybe I'm thinking of Turkey if that's law in Iran.

Well at least they didn't get beheaded or stoned to death...

Is it overboard...sure...but I've heard of worst cases.

From what I read, it is illegal to dance in Iran.

The kids were arrested because the video was considered "vulgar." This had NOTHING to do with "happiness."

Yes .... we know. That's a different 'happy'.

The term 'being Happy' is an urban term used to describe people who dance and make videos to the 'Happy' song that was referenced. It's a thing to do. That's what they are talking about with the word 'Happy' and that people were arrested for 'being Happy' - the urban term.

Just proves music is a universal language and can bridge all gaps and bring people together... You see this is why religion and law don't go hand in hand, not covering your face becomes a crime... Facepalm!

I'm not sure about that. I think it's illegal for men and women to dance together, especially if the women are unveiled. (I had to edit my post because I forgot the "dancing unveiled" part.)

Right now the story is "it's illegal to be happy in Iran" and given the idiot singer Pharrell Williams posted on his FB page "It is beyond sad that these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness," makes it look even more dubious.

They weren't arrested for spreading happiness.

I've seen posts on this site talking about people being arrested in Iran for using squirt guns on a hot summer day; for women wearing sandals that show toes; for having Barbie Dolls .... lots of stuff.

Because the press always uses a play on words. It makes for good copy. The 'happy' being referenced is ... 'Happy' ... as in the song and dance. Not the emotion. Although ... a case could be made for the Iranian authorities cracking down on something that makes people happy ... like dancing to the Happy Dance. (and making squirt guns illegal ... and barbie dolls ... and toeless sandals ... etc) But whatever ...

Yes, it also illustrates the point that we shouldn't view Iran as some monolithic society that hates western culture.

I completely agree, I often defend Iran with respect to the abuses they suffer at the hands of Israel and the US, I even defend their right to have a fully operational nuclear energy program. It's always the leaders that are to blame... we live in a world full of sane people led by lunatics.

Many people who crave power live in constant fear that they are going to lose it, hence the lunatic leaders...

I understand your point, then again some laws were made to be broken and this is a perfect example... If you're a practicing muslim I would not expect the type to be dancing in the videos, normal carefree people shouldn't have to abide by stupid religious law...

That's not the story that is being sold through the MSM.

No offense, but your argument sounds utterly ridiculous - re: potato/poTAHtoe. Never mind that it still has nothing to do with WHY they were actually arrested.

So I guess that these people are also in big trouble?
www.youtube.com...

They would be if they were in Iran doing that. Although most of the women were wearing hijabs so the might have had their charges lessened. Did you see all the 'Happy' videos on the right side when you go to that YouTube site? Everyone around the world makes 'Happy' videos. And the people in them are happy and having fun.

Ah, but the clerics in Iran think that being happy and having fun are evil wrong bad things. Who knows where that might end!?!

There's the rub. It's almost always religion that is at the root of killjoyism and misery in this world. Whether it's Christian puritanism or Islamic idiocy like this, it's the fear and guilt about people having a good time.

Seriously, in 2014 why hasn't the human race grown out of religion? We're only on this planet for a short time so why can't we have fun and get along, rather than live according to outdated rules to try and please some mythical almighty being and get a free pass to a party after we die?

You are correct, it isn't illegal to be happy in Iran, as long as it is Sharia defined and sanctioned 'happiness'.
I should have said that it is illegal to dance in public in Iran or mixed genders dancing.

Well considering it is a religious thing with the arrests, womens clothing and all,
maybe the lyrics also have something to do with it.
The song proclaims happiness is the truth.
Lyrical version:

I am sure some clerics have a problem with that.

I'd have to care what people think to be offended. I don't. So no offense taken.

Common sense .. the press always uses word plays in their headers. It's just a word play. A word play that actually comes close to being accurate .... they WERE arrested for being both happy (the emotion) and Happy (the song/dance).

Who is to say what is a stupid religious law and what is it? We have A LOT of dumb laws on our books in the USA (federal and state, mostly states) that stem from religion.

It really is a matter of being from a different society that "doesn't understand" the other society. Go to a beach in the USA and get nude and you'd be arrested, do it in Europe and it's the norm. Both are very similar "westernized" societies, America just happens to be stuck in the Victorian Age.

In fact, I'd wager that America is closer to an Islamic state with regard to body, nudity, and sex than most European countries are.

Now, this begs a funny question (I don't mean to derail anything) - Muslims living in Europe, do they ever bother going to the beach? ZOINKS!

It's all about control. Religion is a way that a small group can control a very large group. These so-called "religious leaders" are afraid that if the youth start following the Western ways, that their religious controls will no longer work. They will lose their control, and they just can't have that.

Religion in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing. It is how it is used (or misused) for power and control that makes it bad.

Killjoyism. I think that fits. Getting arrested for doing the Happy dance that is done around the world .. in other 'Islamic countries' as well as non Islamic. Those young folks were happy. Joyful. Doing nothing 'obscene'. And now if we look at the videos of them in the opening post .... they are subdued and self recriminating and the girls are all wrapped up again. Killjoyism ... yeah ... that's a good way to describe this.

Nude beaches exist you know, there is an avenue for people to do those sorts of things. Weird that porn is legal but walking around nude is not, no? Stupid laws, don't twist it around, religious or not we have the right to do what we want as to not offend or hurt others... Of course we have stupid laws here and I would urge people to fight them, just like in Iran, don't be obtuse...

You beat me to it, FF!!

I just saw the headline, and went to the youtube link. Here is the entire video:

Obscene?
OBSCENE???

Those people are nutjobs.
Apparently the kids were told a friend had been in a car accident and given directions where to go; when they arrived, security arrested them.
Their parents each paid the equivalent of $10,000 bail. They're supposed to be released today -
this is according to a comment below the vid by the person who posted the video to youtube.

IranWire reached a source informed about the nature of the arrests. “All of the young producers received phone calls informing them that a friend had suffered a car accident and required their help. When they arrived at the address they had been given over the phone, security forces were waiting to arrest them.” Security forces have also allegedly threatened the families of those arrested that if they speak to any media about the detentions, their children will not be released. The source said that each family has paid a bail of 30 million toman, the equivalent of $10,000, and been told if they comply with the demand not to speak to any media outlets, their children will be released tomorrow, Wednesday.

Cute kids! Very cool! That is the tamest dancing I've seen in a long time - and they DID look happy! Youth in spring. Obscene for them to be happy.

What a messed up place. Sheesh.

It was a fun video. I actually enjoyed watching it. The kids did look very happy and carefree. Hopefully the youth movement in Iran will expand and kick out the Muslim hardliners.
