What mass is converted to energy in a chemical reaction?
Here's a simple one, lets burn carbon and release some energy.

C + O2 = CO2

atomic mass of C = 12.01070 g/mol
atomic mass of O2 = 31.99880 g/mol

12.0107 + 31.099880 = 44.0095 g/mol

molecular mass of CO2 = (wait for it...) 44.0095 g/mol

No loss of mass. Where did the energy come from?

www.webqc.org...

yes I agree you can effectively see little mass difference as the energy is so small,
There is a nice explanation about the energy from the chemical bonds at this site

There are text books that try to use E=MC2 to explain chemical reactions but they forget that breaking of bonds produce energy usually in the form of heat. And there is no mass conversion needed.

Warp drives, matter from light : interesting.

The desperation to stay ahead is deep and wide.

God created the natural laws which govern the Universe, and these laws keep humans confined to home planets.

Humans can use a spaceship but the odds against space travel are massive. There is a difference in the real world and dream world.

It hurts to see research threads like this just die out. Where are the scientists performing these experiments? Did they complete them? Did they prove it possible? Did the idea just die out in committee like any good intentioned law? Maybe that was too far.

The irony.

Creating matter you cant see from light you can see

Still very cool though, star trek replicators here we come!!! (Just add maglite)

You need to stop getting your science info from press releases/hyperbolic media stories. For any story reported (typically in an irresponsibly dramatic fashion), there's an ongoing paper trail of cold, hard research that can followed if you're prepared to put some legwork in.
