I think this is very revealing of how humans can be lead to follow anyone (even with a story as obviously fake, bat# crazy and full of failed prophecies as John Titor's)- they seem to have a need for it.

I thought dude just wanted some old computer? (Now just humour me and pretend he was real for a second)

If he came back, grabbed up a computer, then went home, I don't see how he saved anyone.

If anything, he STOLE from us and then FLED; ABANDONING us to our apparently doomed fate.

I think I know the real intentions behind this maneuver of creating a church, and it has all to do with TAX PURPOSES.

The gist I got was that he warned us about what would happen if we kept on our current path, and that helped steer us clear of his predictions (which is why they haven't happened).
