I have many times experienced the auditory equivalent of pareidolia. It occurs when I am hearing white noise such as a fan, air conditioner, or heavy wind. I've heard what sounds like an old radio station or a crowd of people talking, but I can't quite make out what is being said

I have wondered if others experience this. I don't really like to bring up the subject because I don't want people to think I'm schizophrenic. I'm not sure if it's a neurological disorder or if it's something others experience and just don't mention.

just to test: window.
eta: so.. S.O.'s tweak of ATS recently doesn't like us typing w i n d o w.
It's never liked the word window . If you have any sort of punctuation next to it, like a comma or period, the word won't show up. Put a space before the period at the sentence end when typing window .

I am sooo glad you said that.
Many times in my place, I know no one else is here, but just in the next room it sounds like a big crowd of overlapping voices and conversations. In the past I thought I was half-dreaming, and gotten up to look around -- of course there aren't 30+ people or sometimes like Grand Central in my living room.
Sometimes with a fan on and sometimes not--just my thoughts.
I just sort of chalked it up to that weird chemical the CIA tested on unknowing people then went counter-culture or those weird things that the mysteriously named MOD MysticMushroom is allegedly named after.
Yes yes yes.
And quietness can be deafening.
Ever done any background check on your place? How old is it? Any known Indian Tribes settle there in the past?
Is that paeridolia?
i don't know, really. I'm asking.

My place is just about a half-mile above the caves the Cahokia "Indians" used to use for some rites and burials...(I'm across the river).
Thing is St. Louis is nicknamed (locally at least ) as the Mound City,.. literally hundreds of mounds leveled to expand the city with no archaeological interest whatsoever (at the time). Tons of caves under the city.
But how old is My building? It's not but decades old....built on a building from 1886, built on something older I'm sure, and then older, and then older...
Does it wig you out on that level? That must be intense.

I know you put the "rolley eyes" after that (I've done that too many time to count), but I really was serious about what I'm hearing. Like I said, unless cat's can sound like a large multicultural crowd, that's what I hear.
And also like I said There is history on this entire side of the river, an there is Also History of such possible substances/chemicals I may have referred to in a distant way (hell, why would the govt or the owners care, I'm sure they have looked at and said the forbidden words of certain things......like, um ....window....lol)

I hear background noises. Conversations, jets and devices (could be a copier, fax) heavy machinery. Phantom phone rings too.
I live in the country. There's no sources for the sounds. It will be in the dead of the night . It seems as if laying my head on something will often amplify the sound which sucks when trying to sleep.
However, what you are experiencing is on a completely different level. I could become quiet panicked as sometimes I fell borderline crazy looking for things I can hear but aren't present.

Some of it could be residual energy you are picking up on, maybe the bulldozers that were used to clear the place you are.
The phone rings... I hear those a lot. Almost every time I turn on the water to brush my teeth, I think I hear the phone. I'll spit and run to the living room, only to find the phone is not ringing.
