I have many times experienced the auditory equivalent of pareidolia. It occurs when I am hearing white noise such as a fan, air conditioner, or heavy wind. I've heard what sounds like an old radio station or a crowd of people talking, but I can't quite make out what is being said

I am sooo glad you said that.

Many times in my place, I know no one else is here, but just in the next room it sounds like a big crowd of overlapping voices and conversations. In the past I thought I was half-dreaming, and gotten up to look around -- of course there aren't 30+ people or sometimes like Grand Central in my living room.

Sometimes with a fan on and sometimes not--just my thoughts.

I just sort of chalked it up to that weird chemical the CIA tested on unknowing people then went counter-culture or those weird things that the mysteriously named MOD MysticMushroom is allegedly named after.

I have wondered if others experience this. I don't really like to bring up the subject because I don't want people to think I'm schizophrenic. I'm not sure if it's a neurological disorder or if it's something others experience and just don't mention.

Yes yes yes.

And quietness can be deafening.

And yes sled735 20" inch box fan here lol.

I've got a collection of fans bought over the years from staying out of town.

just to test: window.

eta: so.. S.O.'s tweak of ATS recently doesn't like us typing w i n d o w.

It's never liked the word window . If you have any sort of punctuation next to it, like a comma or period, the word won't show up. Put a space before the period at the sentence end when typing window .

Got it!!

The owners are secretly and subliminally waging war on Microsoft and promoting Apple (or other OS)!!!!

Yeah, no.

It's just coding with need of help not gotten.

No conspiracy, sadly.

Bum, bum bum ...or is it?

Ever done any background check on your place? How old is it? Any known Indian Tribes settle there in the past?

ALL the time! It's usually so distant that I can't quite make out what's being said, or what the tune is.
I can't even get a radio station out in my area, and I've checked outdoors to see if there's a radio playing in a neighbors yard.
Never have found an explanation, but I'm reasonably sound mentally- I think-
, so I just accept it as one of life's mysteries.
Science did prove years ago that some people with silver fillings, and some with braces can actually pick up radio stations!
I have neither, so I just go with it. Wish I could turn the volume up!

I identify myself as a skeptic (or sceptic as you Brits and Aussies wish--makes me think I'm infected) and all that ..blah blah, But it's not the silence...at least not for me.

I live downtown STL overlooking the river and value my privacy well on and off the internet (proxies to MO cities, so forth).

That said, there are things one, no matter hard they try (without tons of $ to completely soundproof) hears from the outside world while also hearing things Very localized that simply just are not there.

It's not the appliances turning off and on, it's not the cats ( at least I don't think they speak multiple languages, and several at a time)----it's to ME in MY Place many voices of many different languages overlapping as though in a crowd.

Not unlike St Louis is now (but in neighborhoods a mile away at least). But when I go to eat or drink,, yeah it seems like a multicultural milleu like I hear in my bed many nights.

Is that paeridolia?

i don't know, really. I'm asking.

I can usually (almost always tell the visual).

I imagine face recognition and seeing face patterns is what Pareidolia is.

But I have a hunch its because we're meant to, and its programmed in us to.

And this whole universe is energy waves. They know that. There is no solid state matter to matter about except the waves fluctuate or render, into reality for us. But what does that mean in a sense, what is everything around us. Why am I looking at faces and especially eyes in clouds and mountains. What are we in. You can't just blame the program that decodes, in the brain but actually question what the heck this could be. Because I have a list of theories on it. From recycled bodies, to markers, for et bases, to spirit shaping waves, in clouds, to entities carving nitches in our mountains to observe, to compressed material overlay of past cycles, to sharing realms even.

My place is just about a half-mile above the caves the Cahokia "Indians" used to use for some rites and burials...(I'm across the river).

Thing is St. Louis is nicknamed (locally at least ) as the Mound City,.. literally hundreds of mounds leveled to expand the city with no archaeological interest whatsoever (at the time). Tons of caves under the city.

But how old is My building? It's not but decades old....built on a building from 1886, built on something older I'm sure, and then older, and then older...

I hear background noises. Conversations, jets and devices (could be a copier, fax) heavy machinery. Phantom phone rings too.

I live in the country. There's no sources for the sounds. It will be in the dead of the night . It seems as if laying my head on something will often amplify the sound which sucks when trying to sleep.

However, what you are experiencing is on a completely different level. I could become quiet panicked as sometimes I fell borderline crazy looking for things I can hear but aren't present.

Does it wig you out on that level? That must be intense.

Ah, Ha!! I 'felt' there were natives involved around you.
When I read that, that's the first thing that came to my mind.
Any place that has had Native Americans, especially disturbed graves, has LOADS of paranormal activity! And then you have a river running next to you too. Water increases paranormal activity as well.

Wow! No wonder you are hearing all these voices, even though you are a skeptic. Just watch out for other signs.
I bet you've shrugged off a lot of things that were actually 'them', thinking it was just your imagination, or some coincidence.

I know you put the "rolley eyes" after that (I've done that too many time to count), but I really was serious about what I'm hearing. Like I said, unless cat's can sound like a large multicultural crowd, that's what I hear.

And also like I said There is history on this entire side of the river, Amd there is Also History of such possible substances/chemicals I may have referred to in a distant way (hell, why would the govt or the owners care, I'm sure they have looked at and said the forbidden words of certain things......like, um ....window....lol)

That's a quiet disconcerted emoticon to me. No jabs and in all seriousness.

I don't doubt you. For very good reasons.

Interesting theory. I hadn't thought of anything like that.
You should try out for that radio show, Out Of the Box, here on ATS. You would WOW them, sister!

Thanks for your post.

Some of it could be residual energy you are picking up on, maybe the bulldozers that were used to clear the place you are.
The phone rings... I hear those a lot. Almost every time I turn on the water to brush my teeth, I think I hear the phone. I'll spit and run to the living room, only to find the phone is not ringing.

I've never thought about that.

ummm, pics?

Something I noticed one time cruising pics of Waverly Hills Sanitorium. As far as I know this photo is original from the era.

www.prairieghosts.com...

If you look at the right most window on the wall there appears to be something there…

I am not aware that anyone has noticed this "anomaly" before.

That's a creepy looking bugger! I DO hope that is just pareidolia!
