The study found that frequent marijuana users performed worse than non-users on tests of cognitive abilities, including divided attention (ability to pay attention to more than one stimulus at a time) and verbal fluency (number of words generated within a time limit). Those who had used marijuana for 10 years or more had more problems with their thinking abilities than those who had used marijuana for five to 10 years. All of the marijuana users were heavy users, which was defined as smoking four or more joints per week.

The study involved people ages 17 to 49 taking part in a drug abuse treatment program in Athens, Greece. There were 20 long-term users, 20 shorter-term users and 24 control subjects who had used marijuana at least once in their lives but not more than 20 times and not in the past two years.

The marijuana users performed worse in several cognitive domains, including delayed recall, recognition and executive functions of the brain. For example, on a test measuring the ability to make decisions, long-term users had 70 percent impaired performance, compared to 55 percent impaired performance for shorter-term users and 8 percent impaired performance for non-users. In a test where participants needed to remember a list of words that had been read to them earlier, the non-users remembered an average of 12 out of 15 words, the shorter-term users remembered an average of nine words and the long-term users remembered an average of seven words.

You're both right. But that's not the point. The point is that alcohol has all of those effects AND a history of causing deaths and severe terminal illness. Alcohol is still legal. So why is marijuana illegal?

What about the psychological effects?

Getting high could be slowly ruining your life if they are right about that.

Now i wont put my own opinion in here since thats against the forum rules.

Getting drunk on a regular basis can slowly ruin you life...alcohol is still legal.

In fact, we tried to outlaw alcohol once...all it brought was crime and no one stopped drinking. It just made everyday people criminals.

I don't get why people don't understand that marijuana is the exact same principle...however marijuana isn't even as dangerous as alcohol.

There are pro's and con's, the effect wont show in 3 months, a year or 5 years, it's the long term effects that are going to tell if it's a good idea or a bad idea, i would guess thats in the range from 10 to 50 years.

If it's positiv, enjoy your freedom.

If it's negativ, good luck fixing it.

Long term effects? Like the long term effects of the war on drugs which has gone on now for 40+ years? Creating the largest prison population in the world, spending more money on it every year, create massive drug cartel empires, etc.

We've been studying the effects of marijuana on people for a while now. Remember the 60's? Our parents have been smoking it since the 60's and look at them. They are no worse because of it.

It might only ruin your life if you don't like getting high all the time or if due to use you can no longer get

Yeah it is pretty stupid for a society to spend cash holding people in Jail for possession and or use of a substance that is pretty close to the effect you get from a legal substance such as alcohol. Not only that but how many human lives has our laws ruined by putting people in jail for such a small crime that in most cases only effects the user and not other people?

Maybe we should have spent the money we spend putting MJ users in jail on finding a cure for cancer? If we had used it for that maybe your brother, uncle, friend, sister, mom or who ever you know that died of cancer might still be alive.

"Wished it Had Never Funded"????? LOL...that is a joke right?

The truth is I am sure quite the opposite...secretly they wanted to fund it and later on legalize it so more people would smoke it for 2 reasons...

1) Make it a taxable commodity
2) Make it legal so people who smoke it would get dumber over time with regular use

Think about it..if more people smoked pot, the dumber they get, the richer the rich get because they have no one to compete with them on a higher level thinking scale.

But I could be wrong, Snoop Dogg is a walking pot plant himself....

The most hazardous and potentially lethal part of possessing or using pot is getting caught. And I think that tells you everything you need to know about it.

Exactly. All we are doing is fighting an enemy with an infinite profit margin. People will continue to seek out drugs regardless of their legality (especially the addictive ones). There is no feasible way we can continue to fund the war on drugs. That is why our prisons are overcrowded and we end up releasing people early to make room for no offenders. The government is missing out on key taxable revenue instead sinking more and more money into fighting drugs. Instead they can be taxing this stuff and spending FAR less money on addiction support venues.

Do you have and figures and correlation to the claim that smoking pot makes you dumber? Or are you just repeating propaganda that you've heard the government spew at us through the D.A.R.E. campaign?

What's that supposed to mean? If you want to provide evidence that marijuana makes you dumber you need to show that decrease in intelligence over a lifetime, not while they are wasted.

Wow you really have no clue do you... for the last century most governments of the world have done everything they can to keep cannabis illegal, there is a reason for that. If they wanted to make it legal and tax it they wouldn't bother conducting a bunch of studies to justify their position, they'd just do it like they do everything else without legitimate justification. They funded those studies because they were hoping to prove how bad cannabis is, but instead they got the opposite result and shelved these studies so they would be forgotten. Furthermore, cannabis can open your mind and let you think outside of the box, and there is no solid evidence is makes you dumber. One could easily argue that they keep it illegal precisely because it allows people to see through propaganda. Your entire premise is absolutely absurd and has no correlation to reality. You're painting a picture which is almost a mirror image of reality.

Oh come now...everyone knows that stimulating the brain makes you stupid just as exercising makes you weak. Stop using logic in a reversed logic world.

The reason why they made it illegal in the first place was because pot is a drug...the problem is that society wants freedom to smoke whatever they want and they are using pot as an excuse to "cure" health problems or symptoms of health problems.

So when there is a huge push by society to make something legal...governments will re-evaluate their stance on the issue and come up with a consensus...but by doing so, they are also looking for ways of generating revenues through a tax on something. And in this case, why not legalize pot to make society happy, and then tax the drug to make the government happy...win win situation?
